Cleaning rust off tent poles

Does anyone know of a cheap OS way of getting rid of rust?My OH has bought a tent off Ebay and the poles are all rusty.

Wire wool and some cooking oil.

should imagine if it's just surface rust rubbing down with wire wool should do the trick.

put the poles on the ground - paving slabs or rough concrete, and rub them over the ground with your shoes on.

a money-saver alternative to wire wool is silver foil.
