Still got a long way to the bottom of the HPC...Obama vows 2.5 million new jobs by 2011...it's all down hill until then

I take no pleasure from saying this, 2009 is going to be one of the worst years ever, equaling anything that the Great Depression had to offer. House prices will be 40% off peak at least by this time next year. 3 million + unemployed, the pound on its knees as Brown borrows and prints 24/7.0

I went through the 90's [recession] and didn't even notice...last couple of months i can notice the down turn in consumer spending.0

All week I have sat and watched the news and started to feel all gloom and doom ;today I went into town and it was so busy I could not get a seat in the coffee shop and every thing seemed as it was before and if I had not known better and had not watched the news I would never have realized that the bad times were here .0

If it's really busy you have to queue at the tills -
We go to the US a couple of time a year and always go shopping, one thing I have noticed over the years is, although shopping centres are full of people, the tills aren't busy. This year we noticed it more than in previous years. Hordes of people but quiet shops.
I haven't been to our local town to do any Xmas shopping yet, but when I do it will be interesting to see how many people are actually spending. Not that I'll be doing much shopping in town - I tend to use the internet for most of it,
and I would have thought the growth in internet shopping must have some impact on shops anyway.
TBH, the impending (or already arrived) recession won't make any difference to our Xmas shopping or spending.
I have one daughter already spending for England, the other one is waiting until nearer Xmas as she thinks things might be cheaper. The son and heir does his bit of shopping usually around Xmas Eve, if he can't get someone else to do it for him.0 -

My Dad tends to slip out early on Christmas Eve, muttering something about "finishing off the Christmas shopping"....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

This is where the internet scores ... I've already done most of my gift buying online and am about to finish it this afternoon.
Prices are generally much better than the shops and often free shipping so as long as you know exactly what you want, it's perfect.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
I am still lagging miserably in the Christmas shopping table....I have purchased the grand total of 2 pressies!
I am usually far more organised than this but the money has just not been there to do the shopping...mind you, I do know what I want to buy for the majority of them!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

OH and I have 2 between us - both Hebrew DVDs for Isaac. OH bought them in Israel, as they are so much cheaper to buy there than here, when he went for his great-aunt's mourning period recently....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
From my point of ( business) view, it is pretty darn quiet. We lost the largest chain of retailers in our sector early this year. Independents are falling by the wayside.
The internet is really putting pressure on the "bricks and mortar" outlets who have increasing overheads. Dangerous times in the New Year?0 -
Over here in Norfolk, the silly car park charges are the main reason for web shopping. As soon as car park charges exceed postal charges for items, then shops will lose out .....0
