Got a Job, but i want another... emergency tax confusion..

Ok, so I haven't had a job for a while prior to now. (well over 6months)

I started a temporary fulltime job a few weeks ago, and im on "emergency tax", some code begingnig with a 6 (I REALLLY don't understand tax at all), this apparently means I can only earn £166 a week or something, so anything extra gets taken off as tax. So far this hasn't worked out to bad, as it's near what im earning anyway. The problem is, the money im making isn't enough for me, and I want to get another job (like Tesco on Sundays or something), but as im already earning the most I can, will it mean the Tesco job would pay £0, as im already filling the limit on my mon-fri job?

Thanks to any one who can help, apparenlty a "p45" would fix this tax issue, but wen the job centre gave me it (was on job seekers prior), it had the exact same emergency tax code on it (not got it anymore, gave to temp job).

So what are my options, it seems im not allowed to make more than 160 a week for some reason, which is really !!!!!!, but im worried if i get another job (weekend job) they will screw me over as usual and ill make nothing from it lol, or want me to fill out some petty stupid long p100000000 form

Tax code 603L, Wk/Mth 1 is the emergency tax code. It means you will get all the tax-free allowances that you should get but does not take into account how much tax you have already paid this year. Tax code 603L without wk/Mth 1 is a cumulative tax code which looks at the whole tax year. If you hand in a P45 or P46 you should be put on this tax code and may be due a rebate if you haven't worked in this tax year at all.

this apparently means I can only earn £166 a week or something, so anything extra gets taken off as tax.

No it means that you can earn £116 per week before paying any tax at all. Anything you earn above this amount will have tax taken off at 20%. So if you earn £150 per week, the first £116 will be tax free and then you will pay tax at 20% on £34 which is £6.80.

It means that you would pay tax at 20% on the tesco job - not that you get no pay.

603L with nothing after it is the normal tax code.

I think you are a bit confused. You can make as much as you like but you will be due to pay tax on it.

WoW! thank you ever so much for your quick responce, I really apprechiate it.

20% Tax dosn't seem THAT bad (and presumably I can claim back what im owed later on? which is good, as its like a forced savings account with loads of hassle to withdraw it ;);) - except no interest lol) (and I was wondering how I managed to earn £180 last week, so thanks for clearing that up)

In that case, I'll pop along to a tesco and try and get a sunday job (I hear they pay like £11 a hr on sunday, which means you can take home like £80 for one days work - no matter how crappy the job is, on top of my 9-5, and my part time uni :rotfl: ). Oh the joys of being in debt ...:mad:

Any way, thanks ever so much for clearing up this confusion for me, I really do apprechiate it :j:j

If you have overpaid then yes. If your tax code is 603L on your main job you shouldn't overpay. Do you earn more than £166 per week on this?

I earn't £213 in my first week(just on very basic pay, doing a temporary job - data entry, which is all I could find in this reccesion! even though I have a degree - kind of... part time this year to do my disseration to get hounors), this equated to 181.92 (19.20 PAYE 11.88 Nat Ins), it says "603L WK1" on the payslip, total of 31.08 tax which seemed reasonable to me. Also, for a Weekend job, won't they want a P45? Which i've already given to my 9-5 job

Has the temp job ended, or is this ongoing?
If it's ongoing and you want another job, ask the second job people to tax you on all the income (there's a way of doing this, I think there is a form you can fill in)
Also check to make sure your new temp job (if it's still ongoing) does get your tax right. You should be due a tax refund in the short term and will start paying tax eventually if you earn enough.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

WK1 means that you are on a non-cumulative tax code. You should really be on a cumulative tax code so you need to get rid of that WK1. Did you hand in the P45 that you got from the job centre?

As anniecave says you need to fill in a P46 for this job. They will then allocate you a BR code which means you will pay 20% tax on all the earnings at thar second job.
