might lose job, no contract -where do she stand

my sis has worked for her employer for over two years (insurance brokers), but has not had a contract. her boss has now put targets in place, and her wage will be deducted if she doesnt meet them. Quite simply is this legal?

Deductions are unlawful without the consent of the employee. Contracts cannot be altered without consent of the employee. A lack of a written contract does not mean a contract does not exist. Contractual terms are deemed to exist if the employee has worked for the employer and practices have existed for a period of time.

ACAS would be worth a call and it would be an idea to get a hold of the contract which she is entitled to see.

As for losing her job, they would have to follow the statutory disciplinary procedures. If they lay her off redundant, she would be entitled to redundancy pay.

Oh right. So the fact that employment law prohibits it doesn't mean a thing then?

An employer cannot make deductions from your wages unless it says in your contract that they can. No contract, no deductions.

    As Conor said, ACAS.

Many thanks for these replies, sorry if this sounds thick but what does ACAS stand for? Ignore-just realised there is a link in the post.
