Cheap Brown / Wholewheat Pasta?

I know you can get white pasta by the bucket load at Asda etc in the value range but where can I get brown pasta from (in bulk if need be) cheap?

Also a side questions, is there much in i health wise between the two or is it not really worth switching to?

Thanks

Emma

Hello Jenk (for the 2nd time today already!)

I get my brown pasta from Sainsbury's usually. It's 65p for a 500g bag, so a bit pricy compared to the value stuff. They "hide" it on the top shelf so I have to wait for a tall good looking man to come along so I can ask him to pass it down to me...;). I've got no Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose or Asda here, and Lidl seem to only do the white stuff, so Sainsbury is my only choice. I think the bigger supermarkets all stock it. Or you could try Holland & Barrett, though they are probably more expensive.

Nutritionaly the brown wholewheat variety is better for you - it's the same principle as wholewheat bread, ie that it isn't overprocessed and there is a higher percentage of fibre in it. It's therefore apparently supposed to keep your appetite satisfied for longer (though can't say as I can tell the difference myself!).

Wholewheat has also retained all its important minerals and B vitamins, which get lost in the processing. I only eat wholewheat. Asda are cheaper than other supermarkets.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • I get mine from Sainsbury's. My husband is a chef and he was sceptical about wholewheat pasta but he has now been won over. My children love pasta and eat the wholewheat spaghetti happily (whereas some my other attempts at healthy eating result in moans and groans).

I buy wholewheat spaghetti rather than the pasta shapes as they are much cheaper, they sell this in most of the supermarkets for normally about 10p more than normal spaghetti.

You might as well go the whole hog and get Organic Wholewheat pasta - usually in stock at Waitrose. At this point we have left the realms of money saving and decided to opt for best possible diet! PS it's tasty too.
