Medicine Cabinet Essentials

Hello,

There's an absolute plethora of cough, cold & flu treatments available - not to mention equally wide choice to buy off the shelf when you have other minor ailments.

I was wondering if there is a list of "medicine cabinet essentials" that any of you keep for basic ailments that are just as good as buying a range of branded mixtures off the shelf?

I could only think of;
paracetamol,
aspirin,
co-codamol for bad pain (this contains paracetamol?),
tea-tree oil (antiseptic?),
cloves/clove oil (toothache?)
obviously lemon & honey but they're in the fridge rather than the medicine cabinet!

ANy other suggetions please?[i prefer 'natural' remedies]

Thanks
Zziggi *who is currently suffering with a bad cold* :-(

  • Hi!
I would not be without ibuprofen (pain killer, anti-inflammatory, can be taken at same time as paracetamol).
Lavender oil as it promotes relaxation (for oil burners or in the bath etc).
Karvol, vicks or similar - for unblocking stuffy noses.
Also the usual range of plasters, bandages, sterile gauze, cotton buds, micropore tape, etc.
Vitamin C tablets - good for boosting immune system (for colds) and hangovers!
For kids - children's paracetamol and ibuprofen liquid.
Wouldn't bother with over the counter cough remedies - in my opinion they
    are generally ineffective placebo effects.
    Hope this helps.

It's many years since I had a teething baby, but one of the few branded items I keep is Bonjela, which is brilliant for mouth ulcers (which I tend to get if I'm run down) or just those infuriating times when you chew your lip/cheek and then keep catching it and it gets worse!
  • Paracetamol
    Vicks or Olbas Oil
    Ibruprofen
    Decongestant tablets
Multi Vitamins (Sanatogen Gold but get these on perscription)
    Lemon & Honey (Fridge)

    Never buy branded only generics.

arnica for bruises and any trauma. Cream for topical application to unbroken skin. Pills prior to dentist, operations etc

calendula cream to promote skin healing

aconite pills for right at the start of a tickle in the throat, prior to getting a cold. Also for nerves prior to flying etc

manuka honey at strength 10 at least. Soothing for sore throat. Add lemon to make it less sweet. Also soothing for coughs

Echinacea and 500mg and 1g vitamin C always handy but especially this time of the year

Ditch the Oil of Cloves. It's pretty useless for all but a very specific sort of toothache, and can harm the gum!

Paracetamol in combination with Ibuprofen is pretty good for toothache, but nothing much will touch the pain of a raging abscess.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
