Restoring Deleted Files/Video's

Hi
Firstly I should say that I am a pc noive so dont understand much techie PC talk but will explain my problem as best I can and hope and pray someone could offer some simple advice.
We downloaded some video camera footage onto our laptop a few months ago and thought we had finished with it and so deleted the files a few weeks later, we also deleted the files from the recycle bin.
Now we wish we didn't as we haven't saved the video's anywhere else, they are not on the camcorder (which we assumed they would be but it appears we've deleted them from there too :-( )
When we go into 'Picture Motion Browser' on our computer (which is where the video files were saved to originally) is looks like a ghost of the original files are still there but you can't do anything with it...
Now am I correct in that these files can be restored by a certain programme?
When I have googled this problem, I have read that if possible you should stop using your computer and possibly download the programme to another computer, this unfortunately is not an option for me.
Would anyone know what programme it is I need to download and how I go about restoring the files?
My husband downloaded something for free but it was the wrong thing, I do not want to do that again and risk damaging these files further....
ANY help gladly appreciated.

You could try using Recuva from here, but the chances of success depend on how long ago you emptied the recycle bin.
Basically, when you delete a file from the recycle bin, the PC doesn't actually remove it from the hard drive, but it flags the hard disk sectors that it occupies as being available to overwrite if needed. The more time passes and the more you use the PC, the more likely it will be that the sectors will be overwritten.
If it's been a few weeks since you permanently ditched the files then I'd say they're almost certainly gone, but you never know until you try. Good luck!0 -
Try a deep scan in Recuva if the basic scan doesn't work. i got some files back from 2007.0

use recuva like suggested.if you cant get them back off your hard drive can you connect your camcorder to your laptop?if you haven,t recorded anything else on it yet you may be able to recuva your film back off that if it uses an sd card for storage.0
