Redundancy

Oh dear. I work in the media and have just been called into a 'serious' meeting. There are going to be LOTS of redundancies in my company. We've already had massive cuts a few months ago but they told us that they hoped that would ride out the economic storm. Seems they were wrong and it's much, much worse than anyone could have predicted.

I'm on a big, high quality broadsheet and naively thought I might be safe from the dreaded R word. And apparently the cuts will be before christmas, so merry festive season one and all

Oh god so sorry to hear this. It can't be nice living on the threat of redundancy. I have been made redundant twice now.

When are you likely to hear who is going? Fingers crossed you are one of the safe ones.

We should hear within the next two weeks. I just can't imagine what we'd do if I got made redundant. I'm unlikely to get a job easily in my sector as no one's hiring at the moment cos of the recession (media's been in recession for some time now). And I've been trying to have another baby so that would have to be put on hold as I guess I wouldn't be able to get maternity leave from a new job. I don'thave time to put it on hold! I'm an old fart!

Gads that's so rubbish! Fingers crossed for you lady, unfortunately I got made redundant earlier in the year and no matter even if you 'expect' it, it's still a shock if that makes sense?

It's worked for me coz I got to spend lots of time with DD2 as a stay-at-home mum which I hadn't previously considered. But I really hope things are okay for you - I was going to say two weeks isn't long to wait but when you are on tenterhooks it's hard...

    Fingers well and truly crossed...

  • Gulp - remember that if you are made redundant, it isn't the end of the world. Although I know from personal experience it does feel that way at times. Chin up...

Thanks all. It's such a blow as we've struggled over the past two years as DH has been retraining to be a teacher and have ended up with quite a bit of debt as we couldn't survive on just one salary. DH just started his job in September so we'd just started to clear our debts... urgh. Anyway it hasn't happened yet so I'm trying not to get too wound up. Who knows, maybe it'll be a silver lining job. Been meaning to leave this place for years.... not quite like this though ...
  • Maybe it's a good oportunity to shore up the finances as best you can at the moment - you've got 2 weeks plus a months notice? that gives you 6 weeks to batten down the hatches.
Also worth doing your cv so that if the worst happens you are ready to go so to speak and get job huning as soon as possible.
Also would you entitled to any redundancy money at all?

I sincerely hope I would be entitled to redundancy money. I've been here nearly 8 years. LAst time they were laying people off they were pretty generous; a month's salary for each year of service (up to 12 years) plus a month. But times are very different now...
