Grrr to Havering Council!

You know what... I'm mad! Really really  !

I'd heard nothing from the council about outstanding incurred fines from late return of library books since I received and replied to a letter they'd sent saying I owed outstanding fines and when I contacted all my creditors I included them - why? - because I owe them money! It was only £20.00 at the time but I still owed them. I wrote to all my creditors asking for an up to date balance of what I owed due to financial difficulties I had been unable to pay them and said I'd contact them in 1 month to offer a settlement. I included in Havering councils letter that the book had been returned on such and such a date and please could they CONFIRM the fine outstanding was indeed £20.00 as per the letter I'd received, copied and included in their letter....

From most of my creditors, I get back a lovely letter of thanks for letting us know and including all the information I asked for... from Havering Council I get a CCJ for £210.00 . understandably there are court fees etc to take into account but come on... £190.00 for 1 book that was returned 8 months ago after being 4 months late! please!

What do I do?

  • Did you not get a notification about legal action or any papers from the court?
  • nope nothing... ! Perhaps they'd sent it to my old address in havering but I updated my details with them when I returned that stupid book (ironically entitled, "Dealing with my debt"!).
