Is there any chance of grabbing all the threads on how to feed a family for £1 etc into one thread? Perhaps a sticky? Or have I missed it?

I used this "recipe" to justify buying organic veg but Im sure it will work for you. I save ALL the veg peelings/muchroom stalks outer leaves of stuff and fridge/freeze as appropriate then I make stock once a week. I then strain it bulk it out with a couple of potatoes or some red lentils and add dumplings for filling lunches.snacks etc.

Also buying potatoes by the sack from farm shop helps, the huge bags pasta/rice bought in bulk.

Sainsbuys soya mince is a cheap protien, as are the huge tubs of dried beans you can get from the indian section of tescos.

also waitrose are doing 1/2 lamb shoulder for under £2, I made casserole in clow cooker with this made 6 meals with some chickpeas carrots toms turnip and onion, it was a bit of a pain to seperate all the meat from the fat and bone but the cats loved all the trimmings etc

    Good luck

Take a look at post 24 on this thread - Queenie's done a fab job of picking out *cheap meal* threads.

I love it when people resurrect old threads - this is Old Style, after all ;) :T

Tesco do fantastic value noodles - 8 or 9p a pack. Add some boiled mixed veg - 90p for over a kilo - and make an egg into an omelet, cut it into bits and sprinkle on top.

I am trying to do the shopping challenge although there are so many threads I can't find what I actually wrote so I am going to try to start a new thread to assist us money spinning mummies into saving money on the shop by cheap, easy delicious recipe ideas. Here goes....

    Bacon, Leek Pasta

Fry in butter a pack of bacon and two leeks chopped up until the leeks are soft and bacon is fried. In meantime make a cheese sauce, 1 oz butter melted, add 1 oz flour, allow to cook for 1 min then add a pint of milk slowly until it all thickens (keep the whisk at hand). Then add in a good two handfuls of cheddar cheese and season as required. In meantime have your pasta cooking, penne works well - you need about 350g. Mix cheese sauce, pasta and bacon and leeks put in a dish and top with breadcrumbs and more cheese (parmesan is lovely if you can afford it but other cheese works just as well). Cook at 200 degrees for about 20-25 minutes until golden on top and bubbling. Feeds 4 and I think this is generous.

    Veggie bake

Fry an onion in a little oil, add 1 tbsp of flour then add one tin of chopped tomatoes, one tin of kidney beans, one tin of butter beans and a big spoon of some spicy tomato chutney. Warm through put in a dish, top with cheese and grill. Excellent with a nice green salad and very easy too.

What can I say ..... Delia we love you.:j

Other recipies very welcome - trying to survive on a budget here!

    Hi SJ,

    Those look like lovely recipes.

Here are some older threads on cheap meals that should help:

Heh. No, I don't think it matters that the thread's that old... new people will always come on to the site and rediscover them, its not a bad thing :)

My Poverty Soup special - generous handful of oatmeal simmered for about 40 mins in whatever stock you've got to hand ( go for the lighter types rather than beef oxo etc ) with a finely chopped carrot and one finely chopped small onion or half a larger one, with some mixed dried herbs or herbes de provence if you have them... I usually have some fresh parsley in a pot so that chopped in at the end cheers it up greatly.

Cheap as anything, hot, savoury, filling, healthy, and tastes a lot better than you think.

You don't have one of those 'soup stones' in the bottom of the pan, do you kittyscarlett? :D

I find buying fresh pizzas when they are on BOGOFF at the supermarket and then layering them any leftover meat i have in the fridge, adding a bit of chili and garlic and a touch of olive oil:- works a treat for nights in!

Ok maybe not the cheapest meal ever! but saves a fortune and tastes even better than your local take-out for when you've got friends round! Did try making pizza dough myself but just ended up with a cakey mess!! :o
    :A
  • i sometimes make a dish out of pasta, sausages (tinned or on offer) and baked beans for sauce, sometimes with a bit of curry powder or paprika in. it sounds gross but actually it's quite nice...
Trying to be good, not always succeeding. :A:beer:

I visit the market once a week and stock up on veggies, then plan my menu from there.

Wednesday night i made veggie thai green curry - not sure of the costings for that one (basically your choice of veggies, some curry paste and jar of coconut milk - then leave to cook on the hob till it's cooked).

I had some rice left over from that so saved it and made stuffed bell peppers for dinner tonight which was dead cheap and delicious (AND HEALTHY!).

1 red and 1 green pepper sliced in half with seeds scooped out (about 60p)
whatever vegetable you would like to put inside (I had some butternut squash left over from previous night and half a red onion). Half a tomato works well too.(50p?)
Some cooked rice (mine was leftovers)
    Couple spoonfuls of ketchup
    Mild chilli powder to taste
    cheese for topping

I drizzle olive oil over peppers and other roasted veggies (you don't need much to fill 4 pepper halves. Bung in oven about 180 and they should all be nice and soft in 30 minutes.
Take out of the oven and mix the roasted veggies in a bowl with the cooked rice, ketchup and chilli powder.
Fill pepper halves with mixture, top with grated/sliced cheese and pop back in the oven till cheese is all nice and melty (another 10-15 minutes)

I served this with a baked potato, reckon the whole meal cost £1.50
