DWP £6000 Overpayment

Im a bit naffed off tonight. Over the last few days I have been looking at what debts I have and have used some good advice and tips that I ve been given and read on the forums. So Ive been feeling like Im beginning to understand where I am and what it is I have to do to become debt free.
However Ive got home tonight to find a letter from Child Tax Credit to say that since 2002 they have overpaid me by £6000 and we would like it back thank you very much.
Initially they wanted either a lump sum or for me to pay it back over 12 months which I cant afford to do so now I have to ring them back and fill in an income and expenditure form with them over the phone.
Sorry to be really down but I feel really deflated now.

Hi there! The same thing hapened to my friend and she rang them and negotiated an affordable monthly payment from her bank account. It happened to me and thankfully it wasn't to bad (£952) and they took it off my next years entitlement. Good luck and don't be miffed - I hope they are reasonable!

Hi, if you post this over on the Benefits board, they might be able to give you some more advice.
What are they saying has caused the £6k overpayment?
I don't think Tax Credits have been around since 2002, this sounds a bit odd.No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -
