  • I have a 8yr old whose birthday is Xmas day so can relate to you on this one!.

I have got her the XFactor Karoke machine. I got a refurbished one off EBay (complete in its original box with all instructions, microphones etc) for just over £50 delivered. I was really pleased with it as it looks like new and works brilliantly (we got it out to try it to make sure).

It also has a camera built in so they can film themsleves or make a "pop" video.

Other than that i have got my 8yr old high school musical and hannah montana items which all the rage at the mo!

  • Its quite good as there is a small screen on the karoke machine or you can plug it into the tv if you want to yourself in widescreen! Plus it shows the words of the song too.

I think you can get them from portable one size to the larger size (the one i managed to get).

  • I have exactly the same problem with my 8 year old. She's 9 in Jan so family and friends are asking me for 2 present ideas!!!

I really have no idea. She made santa list from Argos catalogue but it was very short and contained items that are virtually identical to stuff she already has.

If family members give her cash, she spends it at 'Build a bear workshop' and has approx 35 of those blooming things too!

I end up buying stuff 'for the sake of it'. She already has bike, trampoline, game consoles, karaoke..... You name it!

I want her to have something she will enjoy but don't have the foggiest.

ps - she's not a spoilt brat (honestly!!) and she also has tons of games, craft kits, colouring books, pens etc too, not just expensive stuff.

looks like we are all talking about the same child lol! was looking at ds today but am i wasting my money as really apart from it being the older style there is nothng wrong with it? maybe see about a trade in then it might not seem so bad eh!

agree with the not being spoilt the only time my lot get anything brand new is at xmas and birthdays, they may get tings during the year but they are never new?

Last year I bought my DD horse riding lessons, then for her birthday she got the kit for it. This year I'm really stuck esp as we are emigrating in the new year so do not want to get anything big.....have got her pj's, a big bag (she loves bags!), few books....think that she might get a new DS as the main present??

Can you get non-tangible things? Like tickets to see a favourite show/pop group? Or a subscription to a magazine? We got our son football lessons once (he was only 2, lol) which he loved going to.
  • My 8 year old has asked for an iPod and a GloE Bear for Christmas. Grandparents and Aunty have those covered.

She will then get a load of HSM/H Montana stuff in her stocking. Her main gift from us is a retro sweetie box and a lovely pencil case full of make-up/beauty products. It came to about £10. Whilst she is a very old 8 year old with an interest in how she looks; she doesn't actually wear make up. I just knew she'd be delighted to have some proper make up to play with (as opposed to kids nail polish that slides off) and thought she'd enjoy playing beauty salons on Xmas Day. Plus it's small, consumable and cheap. :)

If your daughter doesn't need any toys, I honestly wouldn't buy any. Our eldest will be getting some fossils and a day out fossil hunting (organised family trip c£40 I think) for her birthday. She's into fossils, it sounds like a great day out that we'd enjoy anyway, yet special and unique enough to make an appreciated present. Another option would be a family meal out token to a restaurant of her choice. These sort of gifts kill two birds with one stone IMO.

Other gifts mine have had that might suit your daughter include Waterstones gift card, National Geographic Kids magazine subscription, Dolphin Sponsorship, Oxfam unwrapped (gifts for less fortunate children). How about cinema tickets?

    HTH.
