Bargain chillis-What can I do with them that doesnt involve eating?

Hi,
Just come pack from supermarket with a pack off the reduced section of about 10 chillis. Only paid 49p! I'm not a fan of chillis in food but wondered if anybody had any ideas of things I could use them for as presents. All ideas considered! They seemed such a bargain so would be great If I could put them to good use.

Some chilli plants are very pretty and decorative, maybe push seeds into a pot with a bit of compost and see if you can produce a nice potplant for birthdays next year. (If they have seeds in).

It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • The tomato and chilli relish on this page is really easy and delicious. In pretty jars, gingham lids and a ribbon, would make wonderful gifts :D

  • Get some pretty bottles put in a few chillies and add some oil - either olive, groundnut or sunflower and you have chilli oil.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Not a great idea, I'm afraid - there's a risk of botulism spores (presumably from the surface of the chillies) growing in the oil, which can cause potentially-fatal food poisoning.

Chutney sounds safest, Wilkinson sell jars and bottles and the like if you don't have any. IIRC, Lakeland Ltd sell gingham jar toppers.

    Yum! Thanks for the link.

I fancy trying this. Do you think I should drain the tomatoes first? And do you crush the mustard seeds first?

No and no :D As you cook it, the liquid boils off, leaving a thick chutney - beware, it's verrrrrrrrrrrry hot which we love ;)
