BR Tax Code for 18 Months

Please help......... I have been working for a company for approximately 18 months and have always been on the BR Tax Code. Despite filling in 2 P46's my employers have been woeful at resolving the matter for me. I am on an annual salary of 31K and wondered if I should expect a tax bill or tax rebate when this is finally resolved.

If my employers do actually resolve the tax code issue will I need to do anything to find out the amount I owe or am owed as the period covers 2 tax years now.

I am totally at a loss so any responses are welcome and appreciated!

Many Thanks

you will have overpaid tax so will be owed a rebate.
once your employers have put you on a correct code i.e. 603L then this years tax will automatically correct istself but you will need to contact the HMRC and reclaim last years overpaid tax.
    Have you a p60?
  • My employer has said they can get me a P60 to fill in if I need to although due to past experiances I am trying to sort this myself now. Would you also know the option I will now need to tick on a P46 under the "Your Presant Circumstances" section?

i think what clapton is saying is you will need the P60 which you would have been issued end of the tax year, as HMRC may ask for this when you are claiming the refund for last year

  • Its also very likely HMRC will have last years P60 details on their PAYE sytem. You should give them a call and ask them to do a calculation for last year. You should also ask them to issue a cumulative code to your current employer to get you paying the correct tax. If you dont have much more income (for example £20,000 bank interst or something) you will be due a nice refund for both last year and this year.
  • Thanks TrevorMax - hopefully Xmas will not be as lean as expected in my house this year!
