Strange pc problem-can't install usb printer?

Hi there,

I have a win xp pro pc with sp3 and all latest windows updates. I am connected to the internet through a usb dongle (wireless).

Although the pc is working well I have a problem in that I can't install an all in one printer. When I try to install the drives making sure that the printer is connected to one of the usb ports the installation process starts then I get a box saying printer is not connected. I have the same problen with either a lexmark all in one or an epson all in one.

I have tried everything, the 4 usb ports at back of pc seem to work ok with the usb dongle, so I assume they are working ok. Nothing to see in the device manager, except the yellow marks of the uninstalled printer. Windows will recognise the printers ok but everything fails at the install stages.

I have disabled antivirus etc and exited other programs but still no joy. The printers work fine on my other pc.

Any ideas on what might be causing this, its an asus a7v400-mx motherboard, maybe I should have installed the printer when I installed windows first as the services packs might have affected some system files which are causing my problems.

All ideas appreciated.

Joe

I know theres a known conflict with COMODO FIREWALL and lexmark printers (Even if its stopped!). So if you use it, uninstall it and try again.

Maybe a clue there if the printers are gone/uninstalled why are the yellow exclamation marks there? Try again to remove them...

I'd disconnect the printer, uninstall the drivers, re-install the drivers.
Connect printer, and let PC detect "New Printer".
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Is USB working for anythng else ?
  • Why not try to see if XP has any native drivers to run the printer, you may not need the manufacturers drivers.

Are you using the install program provided by Lexmark?
Some USB devices can be fussy about the order in which you install them and their drivers, generally the usb device should only be connected once the drivers have been installed.

I would disconnect your printer, delete the yellow entries in device manager and uninstall any lexmark printer software in `add and remove programs`.

Reboot, run the printer install program and connect the printer when the install prog asks you to.
