A nice yummy treat for my hubby............on a budget!

Hi Folks

Well basically I want to give my DH a little treat. I have been diagnosed with RA and he has been doing so much lately that I thought I would give him a nice little treat..............and what better way than with food!

Ok so hes not really a 'sunday dinner' kinda guy, loves picky food, pizzas that kinda thing and I have a kinda limited cooking ability but am very willing to try!

Has anyone any nice suggestions? We have Tesco, Lidl, Asda and M&S near by and to be honest I cant really afford to spend all that much, maybe £20 or so.

Any ideas?

OOOOOOO i would say something like a platter. you could do spicy buffalo wings, onion rings, potato wedges, scampi, garlic bread, tortila chips, you could serve with a selection of dips ie garlic, BBQ

    My mouth is waterin :)

I have reported a spammer hijacking this thread.

To answer the OP, keep it simple, take your time, and put lots of love into the creation and you won't go far wrong. I'd go along with Bella's idea of a platter with dips that you can share and enjoy together.

Sorry to hear about the RA diagnosis, btw.

Sounds like a fab idea! See my brain appears to have turned to mush! I just know he would love it! Thank you so much!

    Thanks LW

The more I think of this the better I think it is. And not to mention should be easy enough for me with my dodgy hands.

  • A similar suggestion to the platter idea: We often make a 'deli board' especially when when we have friends round. We just go to a deli counter at a supermarket (Booths is great for this) and get a couple of slices of salami, ham etc and a few small bits of different cheeses. Then we warm up some crusty bread and serve with a choice of pickles, chutneys, pate or whatever you fancy. To make it more filling you could do a bowl of new potatoes either with butter or tossed in some pesto. Its nice to just 'pick and nibble' as the night goes on and have a bottle of wine. It can work out really cheap as you just get small quantities of the items you choose and its a nice way of trying something different.

Or go for the M&S dine in for 2 @ £10, nice meal and wine with no effort.

Prosciutto (or Parma ham, if you're a bit more flush), Rocket and Parmesan home-made pizza?

Get the Mozzarella, Prosciutto, Rocket and Parmesan from Lidl, a packet of base mix from Tesco or Sainsburys, and make a simple tomato sauce (I use a can of Sainsbury's chair de tomate, some oregano, garlic olive oil salt and black pepper for two large pizzas).
  • To add to the platter/nibbles idea:

You can sometimes pick up those whole round camberts in the supermarket reduced to clear (just when they are getting ripe and ready to eat) but even if not reduced they are around £2 to £3 (depending on brand etc) try and get one which is as soft (ripe) as possible not a rock hard one and one which comes in a wooden box. Remove the wrapping and rub a clove of garlic on the top, spike it a few times with a fork and then drizzzle a few drops (literally) of white wine into the holes. Bake it in it's wooden box with lid on until nice and soft inside and serve hot with crusty bread and/or steamed new potatoes, gherkins, pickled onions or crudite, whatever you fancy really. (I like a good fresh crusty white baguette). Result = instant fondue, ideal for sharing (don't cut it in half, just serve it in the box or it will run everywhere! :) The wine is optional but it goes really well with a glass of wine. ;)

Alternatively, M&S walnut bread (from the in store 'bakery' section) is really nice for a treat (about £1.30) and they have a cheese called 'Pave d' Affinois' (about £2 in a small black box) which goes really well with it but so does their Ravensoak goats cheese (or any good goats cheese). Bite sized slices of walnut bread (it's nice warmed slightly in the oven before slicing) topped with cheese - yum!

If he has a sweet tooth and likes marzipan, M&S also do some really nice Stollen slices which you could have for after - around £3 a box I think.

I know M&S stuff is not cheap, but for a treat I think they are generally nicer/better quality than other supermarkets.

Add a rental dvd and a decent bottle of wine and you should still have change from £20 for the above ideas..
