I have been using my Z120 set at 5 meg and at normal mode. This is more than adequate for what I need the camera for, I also get more photos on the memory card. Up to now the biggest print I have done is 10x8 for my photos. Probably 99% of people buying digital cameras now will only do at max 6x4 prints so yes they would manage on a 3 or 4 meg pixel camera. I know that if I need to do any poster size prints then I have the facility to do so if required. A bit like buying a car with a 3 litre engine when you can have the same model in a 2 litre version. Its your money and its your choice.

What is the need for 7.2 megapixels?

You can crop a section of photo and then blow it up larger without it getting pixilated which you wouldnt be able to do with a 3mp :)

Ah, but i've got a twelve times optical zoom with mine so I have as much control over that problem & more.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

As you say, the greater the optical zoom, the better. However, this relies on you framing and identifying what you want in the picture at the time the image is captured. The higher pixel counts give far more flexibility for post-capture processing, which is largely what digital cameras are all about. I'm stuck with a 4MP camera at the moment and there have been a number of occasions where, following some heavy cropping, the result has been a little pixelated at printout.

As somebody indicated above, it's a case of horses for courses. It's nice to know you've got that headroom in case you need it. 3-4MP is fine for 6x4 point and click jobs, but often editing later on requires a higher resolution for decent results.
