Free Boxes for moving

This isn't as entertaining as free cinema tickets, but just in case anyone was looking for boxes, I spent ages looking for some big boxes the other day, and one supermarket told me that they didn't have any because they pose a fire risk (I couldn't work the logic on that one out, I mean at some point their must be an empty box somewhere unless it just dissolves as soon as the last item is removed). Anyway basically I eventually found a Homebase who had a great little thing going on. At the front of the shop, just beyond the tills, they have a crate full of boxes for people to take at their will! Some great sized ones as well. It is recommended to go in the day as they seem to be pretty sparce after 5pm, but somebody I spoke to in there said that first thing in the morning it is always rammed full of boxes, which I can testify after I raided them for 10 great solid boxes!
This is the case in the bath store, so hopefully the same near you :j

glad you posted this- will have to check them out as all of the supermarkets (tesco, asda, lidl, aldi AND Farmfoods) i've been to recently were really unhelpful about boxes- asda even said they don't give them out to customers, AFTER they'd given me three big banana boxes two days before!
They looked at me as if i was a lunatic asking for boxes, even after i explained it was for moving house! Good post, o/p!... and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should ...0 -
If you are wanting boxes from supermarkets, best thing to do is either go in at night and ask night managers for boxes (crisp ones are usually best), or ask at service desk if they can get night team to save them. I know at Asda the stores get money back for every cage full of plastic/cardboard they return to depots so they will get broken down as soon as emptied!
Or raid fruit & veg in busy times when there are banana/apple etc boxes (as pointed out above)0 -
Aldi are good as they don't have baskets and so they let people take the boxes to carry the food round the store in (if you didn't get a trolley) and to take home instead of paying for a carrier bag.
There are some really good ones too. Co-Op also will let you rummage in their crates out the back for their boxes, they are usually broken down but with a bit of tape they are ok (they fold them down to "flat pack" style so easily reversible).
Most supermarkets (bar Asda) have to pay to have their rubbish taken away and will welcome you taking their boxes.
I have also found stationery shops and garages quite good too (I have moved 13 times in 7 years so I know my stuff!!!!)0 -
Not sure if it's still the same but when I used to work in Claire's all their deliveries (no matter the size) came in lovely 'moving sized' square boxes, and most shopping centres you just left the collapsed boxes with the rest of your rubbish on a night time so we would happily give the boxes to people.0
