Whilst it's a good idea, I think it has been mentioned far too late. A lot of people will already have all/most of their Christmas presents bought by now (as a result of bargains found on MSE!).

If anyone sent me this email now, I'd be in a dilemma as I already have carefully thought out presents for everyone bought and wrapped. I'd feel obliged not to give the present to the person so as not to cause a problem, but then I'd have bought a pointless present.

Maybe if you launch the same next year, do it a month or so earlier.

It doesn't seem to like a max spend of £10, when I tried it produced:
YOUR NAME (YOUR EMAIL) wanted to send you this message...
This Christmas, I'm asking you to agree to a
    No Unnecessary Present Pact
"Let's not spend more than £100 on Xmas presents"

This year, let's not send each other costly gifts that might end up unused, and agree to protect our pockets instead. Your friendship means a lot to me, and a card would be just as welcome as a costly pressie.
I've sent you this as part of the No Unnecessary Presents Pact (NUPP) campaign, designed to fight back against Christmas commercial pressures. Some people aren't sending any gifts as part of it, though I thought we could agree to a maximum of £1 on a present - helping us both out.
If you agree, let me know...
Find out more or send your own free NUPP email at www.moneysavingexpert.com/nupp

The NUPP campaign email is a free, spam free, e-mail service from consumer revenge site www.moneysavingexpert.com. YOUR NAME decided you would be interested in receiving this.
Obviously I've made the relevant bits bigger, and I know I'm supposed to fill out the form and not just send it like this template! :rotfl:

EDIT: It works in the actual e-mail that gets sent, but not in the preview.

  • Whilst i can see this is a good idea i do feel that it takes away the fun of things. I adore christmas and part of the fun is finding presents for everyone. So many people seem to moan about christmas and all the money and time it costs them and then moans about how they dont feel 'christmassy'. I just think if we all stopped moaning about how much it costs and how much time it takes and just enjoyed the act of giving we'd all be a little happier.
  • My wife and I always buy and post presents to my in-laws, (Mother in-law sends a cheque). A couple of weeks ago I thought, phone puff, & suggest we just send cards, my wife did, a FROSTY response would be putting it mildly. Apparently a lot of thought goes into sending a cheque
  • Yes, at last some sense about the 'Christmas' madness. This year the retail sector will be trying even harder to ease limited cash from our pockets. I decided about 15 years ago for family, no presents for Christmas or birthday for anyone over 18 (except my mum), and a small cash amount for those under 18 - and if I don't even get an email saying 'Thanks, got it' from them, nothing the next year. I send really good quality cards, which at least last on display until New Year. This means I can get over Christmas planning quickly, I avoid giving presents no-one wants at huge postage cost, I avoid getting presents I don't want and which go straight to Charity to avoid waste.

I have enough stuff and don't want any more. Those who were offended were perhaps more entranced by getting the presents than by me as a person. Too bad. Christmas is not about presents, it's about caring, sharing time and remembering. And it's over on the 27th.

I totally agree with you. I had a bit of a problem last year when someone commented on presents I had sent, and I sent out a text to family and friends to say Christmas presents were not going to be sent or received by myself next year (Christmas 2009). This caused a family row at the time, and I'm not sure whether to carry it out this year. I would love to but feel so tight. :o

We're using a Secret Santa tool at www.elfster.com. You can send everybody a link and a cut off date. Those who sign up then get sent the name of somebody else to buy for. You can set a limit for gifts and also create a wishlist for the person who buys for you. The organiser can individually block out people (so partners don't buy for each other) and you can arrange to handover gifts at a party or individually.

We started yesterday and we're up to 16 taking part and counting!

It's great because those who don't want to take part don't have to but everybody else has to buy for only one person (or two if you want to arrange for people to buy and receive two presents.

We've set a limit of £10 and I'm looking forward to putting some hard to get, elusive, bizarre items on my wishlist!

The site suggests having one group exchange for adults and another for kids so kids only buy for kids and adults for adults.

I feel this tool is rather bah humbug, sorry but i don't agree with it, it's very impersonal and it's something i'd perfer to say face to face with my relatives.

Christmas is a time for giving and receiving with joy surely.....even if your broke you can manage to get a deal glitch of some sort nowadays.
Envy is the most stupid of vices, for there is no single advantage to be gained from it.:A
  • This is something I've always done. I haven't used a formal agreement as I think that sending out a non-personalised email about it is tacky.
I've simply told my friends that I don't want to do the gift-exchange thing.

Despite this, some of them will still buy me something. I don't feel obliged to reciprocate.
