At least you know all this Charis, your nan & aunt got to pass on their memories.
Hate to admit it Mardatha, but I know it is all true, because I used to visit them there. For a long time the only heating in the house was the two ancient range ovens which had to be relit every day, a fascinating thing to watch but horrible to have to do. They didn't have any covering on the wooden stairs, they were just stained dark brown.
They reminisced about WW2 a lot, but at least I wasn't there. Health and Safety? :rotfl::rotfl: my Mum (14) and her cousin (16) were sent up to the roof of the box factory to watch out for incendiary bombs. If one landed, they were assured that if they put a dustbin lid over it, it would prevent the factory catching fire. They watched the old Tate and Lyle's sugar factory burning on more than one occasion. Goodbye sugar rations.0 -
My daughter just moved to a farm cottage with only 2 coal fires for heating, no heating at all upstairs or at the back of the house. But it has the most fantastic views and baby lambs for neighbours. Total silence apart from sheepies, a big garden (veggies next year- chickens coming soon !) Riches are relative arent they?0

Well,I was in Tesco today & things seemed cheaper in some areas than others. For example, their baked beans have gone up from 39p to 42p but other things are cheaper.
I got 2 bottles of Grants Whisky for £20.I think you have to be savvy now & vary your shopping habits.
I mean today just by looking carefully I got 2 packs of Lamb Meatball skewers which were reduced to a £1 each from £2 odd.
I think it now pays to shop around than just grab what you can from one store.0 -
I have reverted back to UHT milk so i can keep my monthly shop just that, monthly!
I found on my trips to get milk and bread i was spending more than i needed to just by picking up bargains that i really didnt need.
Managed to do a months shop for £150, its a tough month this month, by bf has to renew his jsa so will be eating mostly at my house.
my leccy and gas DD has been doubles thanks to 'helpful' bf setting the timers....and now he cant reset it, its on constantly.
DS made another artwork on his bedroom wall
im now 4 weeks pregnant, feel like pants already! Nausea has not been kind over the past 3 days.
I wish my bf would just move in. i know, both on benefits so scum of the earth, lol but we would be saving the tax payer his part of housing benefit.0 -

It seems to me that it's the storecupboard staples that have gone up in price whereas the "luxury" items and alcohol has stayed about the same or cheaper.
I'm sure it would work out cheaper to live on frozen food and booze!Dum Spiro Spero0 -

Well,
My shopping bill came to around £70 for the month, that included booze & cat food which was about £35. Reason it was so low is because at the end of June I'm going away with the Army for a few weeks & I have a lot of odds n' sods in the freezer that could do with being used up,so this month is an ideal oppertunity to do this.
Then when I get back I'll do a huge shop & stock up the freezer again!0
