Today the axe swung closer, my husband found out that his department manager has been given redundancy as her role has been axed. As he is one of two at the next level its now odds on that his levl will be reduced to one, meaning either he or the other guy will be axed next. Not sure when the next round will hit, but its like damacles sword swinging.0

It's a question of priorities isnt it ? I love my big stove and don't mind having to clean it out once a day. The house is nice and warm in most rooms, we have unlimited hot water, and coal doesn't make sparks. If you keep it lit all year round then its easier managed.0

The renewal for Pup's insurance came in yesterday..._pale_..£350 as near as dammit! And that's without making a claim AT ALL in the two years we've had him! I'll be having a nosey around the comparison sites in a bit to see what else is available & might as well start looking for Contents insurance deals while I'm at it.
Trouble is, I get confused with the terminology so what may look like a good deal for us is probably not the best at all

All this talk of Rayburns reminded me - one winter evening during the 60s, a visitor took off his shoes and put his feet up on our Rayburn fire opening (the fire was quite low); a few minutes later he gave out such a yell when the soles of his nylon socks melted!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Look at M&S. They gave me the best quote by a long way.0 -
Try the NFU for contents insurance, if you take it out they usually give a great quote for pet insurance.

savingmore + cheerfulness - thanks fro that - missed the post entirely so sorry fro not responding. Glad its still being of use to some people.
Well things are tightening up here - boyfriend has his surgery in 3 weeks time and to say i feel sick to my stomach already is an understatement - plus he cant work for like 4 - 8 weeks afterwards which is going to be a nightmare in itself - plus he cant drive either as its surgery on his eye so he is going to get very bored very quickly i think.Time to find me again0 -
Thanks for the help with the insurance; we're already with M&S for Pup which compounded the  factor somewhat. I'll definitely go & explore NFU tho so thanks Lucielle
I can understand your worries SK--No2 had an appt with another surgeon yesterday & still nothing newI appreciate that an operation is not the first choice, but it's all the "trying other things" & explaining to folk outside the family just what IS wrong! The Benefits Agency are less than helpful & the GP only gives certificates for a month at a time, even though No2 was given a medical discharge & is now unemployed. Given a line-up of prospective employees at an interview, who would choose a 26yr old with a glass back & still under medical investigation

Hi All
I've not caught up with this thread for ages but I do find it inspiring.
We aren't too badly off at the moment as hubby has some work, but it isn't for long. When we just have my wage coming in we live on under £10k a year takehome & we live in Berkshire which is one of the most expensive areas. Out of that we pay a mortgage & all the bills there is just the 2 of us most of the time, but occasionally we end up with hubby's son or brother staying with us when they are broke, jobless & homeless. We have a garden so grow what veg we can, dress from charity shops & have no social life, lol. Still we have a roof over our heads & can afford to eat, so we are grateful for what we have.
As to preparing now for lean times ahead, one of the best things I ever bought was a decent sewing machine, I earn extra money using it to do alterations.
