I've been eyeing up the new one too! I'm waiting on a £10 amazon voucher from DooYoo so I might be able to get it for £3.

Baking this afternoon after work, brownies, buns and butterwhirls today. My parents are going to the good food show tomorrow so I can pack them off with some treats for the road. Made them promise to bring me back some samples!

So sorry to see that redundancies are affecting others already. Thank goodness we have each other here for support.

Our dd attended a meeting yesterday, It seems to be going ahead and they said she could appeal (is that even worth trying? )

Her db feels she should fight it and not take the easy route of accepting any old alternative job they may want to sideline her into (if she's lucky), but his generation have no real experience of what a recession can mean. She has the added burden of student debt to sort out as well, although no credit card debt (bless her she has held off from that)

Don't mean to be doom laden but I do feel worse is to come, especially after reading that Mfi and Woolies are suffering, (((hugs))) to anyone affected by that btw

She has until tomorrow to make up her mind! No stress then!

Christmas will be fairly low key here this year, presents mostly home made or bought via ebay, charities etc.,
The mincemeat and Christmas cake is made so just the meat to get in from a costco shop soon. We will not be getting a real tree, just get our artificial one down from the loft and re-cycle the decorations. Home made cookies and sweets and the company of good friends. Homemade sloe gin for Christmas cheer  and maybe make some mulled wine for Christmas eve. Just been reading Nella Lasts War and Peace books and realise we are relatively well off compared to her day:o It is more about making the most of the little you have and that is exactly what I intend to do this year!

Mrs Mac - I would love to see a blog from you too and would add it to my own blog list.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

  • yes we will cope.. won't be "nice" but we will cope... 1 day left to find out....

Christmas - we will be using our artifical tree again and reusing the decs as always :) Have said no to christmas cards this year.. apart from 3-4 people who will get a card and or letter as we live too far away to visit. I have mincemeat ready so will make mince pies plus thought ahead and treated us last month to some sweets/biscuits (as we are/were(?) planning to be away and I won't have freezer/large storage space). Just need to get something 'nice' for christmas dinner and we are sorted - phew! Having said all that... I don't stock-upfor christmas anyway - just a few niceties (usually home-made) to add to the 'specialness'!

Can anyone link me to the nonny mouse site? I would like to join :)

Mrs Mac - get that blog up and running!!! If I can do it.. so can you! :D

I've offered to make all the christmas goodies that I can in attempt to save money. Never made mince pies properly before though - I normally make a big mince pie pie. Which is lots of mince pies without there tops on all squished up into a big pie dish for a tear-away kind of thing.
  • Christmas will be os and low key for us too and I am so looking forward to it this year :D , much more than other years. I feel that lots of us are getting back to christmas as it was in the old days and I like that. I have bought the few treats for the holiday break, I stocked up with all the daily mail freebie dvd`s over the past months, cycling to get each one of them. A nice organic veg box from a new source so no worries about getting the veg in. A turkey crown and trimmings sit in my tiny 3 1/2 drawer freezer. Christmas cake. mincemeat and puds are made and maturing. A bit of organic ham and a few nice bits of organic meat, as a treat, are on the way. Family to spend time with and a warm cosy home. All the adults are giving each other presents costing less than £10 and we love that, we have done that for 2 years now and the thought in them is priceless

happytails, look out for the postie in a few days :D
  • We are cutting down a a lot on gifts this year, everyone's freely admitted they don't need anything anyway.Let's be honest we buy all year round now and it's not like years ago when the only treats you got were on birthdays and Christmas.I'm actually looking forward to Christmas more than ever this year as because we don't have the usual to spend it will be low key and with that comes less pressure and I actually think the Christmas spirit is coming out more because of it,in our family anyway.
I think this recession(which I feel will get much worse and is only just beginning) is not like other recessions we've had.Despite the government telling us we'll be out of it by 2010.I think this recession is the start of a big change in our financial world(literally).Just like the start of the 80s when I believe this terrible madness for spending began and it was very rare to have one credit card, let alone several until then. This time is going to bring about big change and it's going to hurt a of people.I also think that there is no government no matter what party can stop it now that the ball is rolling.
    God knows what'll happen.

    Hi Kittie,

We are having this rule too, this year, and each of us has a choice between one big (relative to price of course) present or a lot of little things. There is plenty to be found in charity shops and jumble sales for a pound or two, or even less if lucky!

I have to say that although of course I feel for the people that are being made redundant, and for the ones who cannot afford to pay the mortgage, a time of recession is not necessarily a bad thing, it affords us time to reflect on consumption and the need for it (or lack thereof).

It also gives everybody the opportunity to value more the "being" rather than "having" and to get close to own and others' humanity. Of course some will welcome this opportunity, some will waver and some will let it pass and spend the recession whinging and reminiscing on the good old days when they drank champagne out of a Jimmy Choo and ate truffles in their porsches :rotfl:

But they are human too! Vive la difference, I say! And thanks goodness for this forum!!!

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Hi CatzNine, I worked in HR for a few years, although I am not "qualified", but I would recommend that your dd should appeal, (she has nothing to lose). DD should write down all the reasons that a) she should be considered to be kept on, b) what she brings to the company that others perhaps don't, c) even if she can negotiate another 3 months to cover others workloads and the transition when other people are made redundant, it's always worth a try, just make sure that she is prepared with a list! At least if she could get an extension until say March next year, it gives her time to look for another job.

It is tough out there at the moment, I feel for all of you who are struggling with redundancies already - I know that I am constantly worrying that it happen to me too.
