It is tough NOW. So how are we coping

I've always only bought certain things in Lidl, like fruit juice, wraps, tins of tomatoes, beans, coleslaw, ham, eggs, meat and frozen pizza. Those items still work out at good value for me.
Its inevitable, prices are going up everywhere.
I'm seriously thinking of stockpiling when things are on offer or buying things like tinned toms, beans now as they have doubled in the last year so could in theory double in the coming year.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
aldi in my area has done the same, so i think that it surely must have to do with the € £ battle thing... shame really as they seem to stock some nice quality stuff...

I haven't been back to Lidl since the bread flour shot up to 75p, it's cheaper in Tesco now and they are nearer......0

rosemarym-Primrose-goochie-rosieben -thank you all for your thoughts and kind words. Our little 'Rosie' is still with us, although I must admit, she is not 'bouncing back' as well as we would have hoped for. So we are just concentrating on keeping her warm and quiet for the time being and hoping that she will improve given time.
I feel so terriby sad for all the people in Australia who are suffering during the bush fires. It must be absolutely devastating and such a terrible loss of life. I am even more appalled to hear that some of these fires may have been started deliberately and I can post no suitable words that convey exactly what I think of those who may have been in some way responsible for this! I hope they are brought swiftly to justice, not that this will bring much comfort to those who have lost their homes and their loved ones. My thoughts are with everyone suffering through this dreadful tragedy.
Our little bit of snow is nothing compared to those awful fires, but I am relieved that DS2 got home safely last night -as when he left us, we were in the middle of a blizzard. Also, DH has been able to go to work today after the deluge we had on Thursday and Friday.
Hope everyone is having a reasonably good if not very good daySealed Pot Challenge 7 Member 022 :staradmin:staradmin:staradmin

Haven't noticed huge price rises in Lidl here, so maybe it is the sterling/euro thing...mind you 2k of plain or sr flour has been €1.19 here for a long time, so maybe they are just bringing the UK price up to date now....still cheaper for you than us I reckon.

I noticed this last time I went in a fortnight ago but wondered if it was me being picky. I don't go to Lidl very often as its about 8 miles away.
I didnt think the fruit and veg looked as fresh as usual. I also noticed they seemed to stock a lot more "branded" items and have special offers on these.
As I say, I don't pop in very frequently so this may have been a one off but it makes you wonder if now theyve got more people coming through the door as their popularity has grown whether they are sneaking prices up hoping people won't notice.April £5 a day challenge- £15.05/£1500 -
The bushfires really made OH and I stop and think. It seems not impossible that parts of Oz will be uninhabitable in the not too distant future. Water is very scarce here now and the situation seems to be at breaking point. Clearly Victoria wouldn't be viable without water. We'd therefore have a worthless house (perhaps even with a mortgage outstanding depending on timescales) and would be penniless in a world that still values money above all. Very thought provoking for us.
Hi Almo
I didn't realise it was quite that bad. I spoke to my SIL (lives in Berwick, Melbourne) on the phone last night and she seems very calm about it, mind you she has always been a very sensible woman. She said that places they used to go on their (motor) bikes have been destroyed and that friends have lost homes.
There was a small fire right by my nephew's house that may have been caused by a discarded cigarette end, but the neighbours put it out between them. Poor nephew is getting married on 14th March and has been planning it for a couple of years, at least. MY SIL said that the temperature has dropped dramatically in the last couple of days, but it was 47°C for a couple of days and if you went outside for a cooling breeze, it was like standing in front of a hairdryer.
She didn't mention the possibility that Melbourne may become uninhabitable. Perhaps she doesn't want to worry her family.0 -
Eliza - hope your little dog recovers well and speedily xx
Hawthorn - I know exactly what you mean about kids and clothes! Thankfully none of mine are precious and all are quite happy with second hand, hand me downs, Primark etc. Well if they weren't they'd have to go out naked!!!! I don't think there is any easy way to save money on their shoes if they keep growing out of them, I think dd1's feet have stopped growing but the other 3 just keep on getting bigger! DS needs new trainers, I will contribute the amount that I would usually pay for some, and he will pay the rest to get the ones he wants! He also needs a new blazer for school, think his size are £38 - don't even start me off on how cross this makes me, it's a state school, and they refuse to allow us to sew a badge onto a blazer bought elsewhere! The quality is fairly good, but they aren't proper wool blazers or anything!
Ceridwen - I thought of you this morning as my friend offered to repair some stuff for me, as we are doing a mini barter and I am baking some cakes and pies for him - I enjoy baking and he enjoys diy (and he's run out of jobs to do at home lol).GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -

Chorizo sausage - gone from £1.89 to £2.49
Passata - gone from £28p to £55p
Just some prices from memory.
There are still plenty of prices that are cheaper than Mr T and these costs are still competitive, but the savings don't seem to be there any more
Anyone else noticed the prices in Lidl shooting up?
Sign of the times  I'll add this to the Tougher thread to keep ideas together.

The prices do seem to have gone up in Lidl's recently but I so rarely empty out my handbag that I have a fair selection of till recipts from various supermarkets and I could tell from those that they are still cheaper than Tescos and Sainsbury's. What I don't know is if the gap has narrowed recently. They also seem to have stopped selling the ultra cheap stuff eg washing up liquid and I have had a whinge on another thread about them no longer selling dishwasher powderIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
