Wedding Dress Dilema

Hi everyone
I am new to this board (And MSE really..) But basically i am getting married in 2010 - although seems far its not that far away by the time i bother to get organised lol.
We are plannign on clearing our debts first then saving as much as possible for the day. Basically, i have my dress already. I bought it off of ebay, in a size too small (as you do but shouldnt do
)
Its Ian Stuart Naploli - absolutely gorgeous dress BUT i keep seeing other dresses and thinking oh thats gorgeous, i wish i had that. Now i originally wanted a benjamin roberts one, but bought this one as it was brand new and a fraction of the price.
I think also because i missed out on the whole dress trying on thing i am having doubts too. i do love the dress and when i have it on its gorgeous - but i was expecting my mum to cry and be overwhelmed by it but she didn, and i wanted that reaction?
Also, as i said, it doesnt fit. I am a UK 12-14 i got it in a 12, but its more like a bloody 10 and the thing isd my chest will never be small enough to fit in it - i did slim down and it was then too big around the waist but still didnt fit around the chest - even though i was in a uk 10-12.
So i am now thinking, shall i just cut my losses chuck it on ebay use the money to clear my debts and then get one made specially for me and have the whole experience with mum there etc. Or do i just get the back changed to a corset back and hope that goes ok!
But then i also feel kind of silly asking for a corset back because it doesnt fit me?!
I just dont know what to do - the dress is worth like over £2000 i bought it for £800 and i know if i put it on ebay i wouldnt even get £500 for it!

hiya
oo dilemma's??
well here's my advice
i would stick to the dress you have got,it is a bargain price and more importantly you feel good in it,which if you got one made to measure you may not feel like you do now.or if you went round all the shops trying different ones on you are going to stress yourself out for now reason, don't know about anybody else but about the 3rd or 4th dress i had tried on i was bored and just wanted to find one that suited me!
in regards to your mum, wait till the day,i expected a reaction like that off my mil when i was trying dresses on and like someone told me, on the day with your hair/make up done you will look amazing, totally different.maybe she wanted to do the shopping around together so a bit disappointed that she didn't have any input???
i say,you have your dress, its done, start planning all the other nice things.
you will always see other dresses out there that you like,i have seen loads.i am waiting for mine from landy being made and im thinking what have i done!should of just bought from a shop, but i know like others on here i will..hopfully be made up when it arrives.
let us know what dress it is if you have any pics
xappreciate what you have got x0 -
I think you should stick with the drsss you have. If you look good in it, then stop looking at other dresses (easier said than done, I know)
Get the back changed to a corset one, which I think looks nicer anyway. Better to pay for alterations than lose out on £300 approx and then still have to buy another dress.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Agree with everyone else. Keep the dress you have.
I bought a dress that was also too small (from a shop) by at least a size, possibly two, because it was a 'one off' so there was no choice and I was planning to lose weight before the big day so took the risk. This was 4 months before my Wedding Day fyi. The staff told me they could alter it to fit, as with most dresses. It did have a lovely corset top. In the end, amazingly it didn't need altering at all. I lost several inches off my back/chest measurements.
Also, wanted to say I had the same reaction from my Mum when she first saw the dress. She was not with me when I bought it. But all the emotion came on the day.
It will all be fine.

I'm going to be the odd one out here I'm afraid. I would go and have a look at other dresses and try them on with your Mum. You can then see if you get that reaction with any others and also see if it changes your opinion to your existing dress. You always have the option of selling it if you do find a dress that you really feel is the one.
I wanted to lose weight before my wedding and left buying the dress until 4 months before the wedding - first big mistake! Because I was a size 20 we went into a couple of bridal shops and they had nothing I could even try on. The 3rd shop they had a couple I could try but was then told that there was basically only 1 dress that I could have in time for the wedding. I did 1 day of trying on dresses, went into 2 shops and came out depressed and in tears from both. The 3rd dress was I thought lovely on when I tried it. I tried on the 20 and I felt really good in it, felt it was very flattering as it felt firmly fitted everywhere, however I was persuaded to go for the size bigger because it would be easier to make smaller than bigger. I did this, My dress arrived 2 days before my wedding and it was too big, I felt huge in it because it didn't hold me in like the first dress. The alterations were a rush job and teh length was all wrong. I always felt that I had missed out on the dress shopping and trying on lots of dresses until I found the one and everyone said it looked lovely but I still felt cheated.
You have to be certain that it is the dress of your dreams because you want to feel nothing short of spectacular on your big day and I just didn't get that feeling.
Good luck.

I would go try some others on as well, as I think either way it'll work out well - either
1. You like the dress you have the best - then you definitely know it's 'the one' and will have no 'what if' thoughts afterwards.
2. You find another dress you like better, then you'll have plenty of time to get it made from Landy if you wanted to - this could mean you might have lost money on the one you've bought, but you sell it for £500, spend £200ish on a Landy one, so you actually end up better off.
Plus you get to have the nice girly day out trying on.
I would also take the ebay one to a tailor to see if the alterations are possible and get a quote. This might make the decision for you so I'd check it's going to be possible before getting 100% set on that one.0 -
I think it's perfectly normal to see other dresses and think they're gorgeous. If you want to put your mind at rest it might be worth going to try some others on. I would definitely go and see a dressmaker about getting your current one altered though, I was amazed when I was told all the things they can do. I also think wedding dress sizes are a law unto themselves, I'm anything between a 10 and 14 depending on the item of clothing and shop and the 14 I tried on barely fit. I have a 16, which needs taking in a bit but is more comfy. My biggest tip when wedding dress shopping is to forget the sizes and not get upset if you don't fit your normal size.
As for your mum, I'm sure on the day she'll have the reaction you imagine. Because I got my dress in a sale, when I wasn't really properly looking, my mum wasn't there and I was a bit disappointed not to do the dress-shopping-with-my-mum thing. However she's now got ME so wouldn't have been able to go shopping with me anyway so it doesn't matter. Sometimes we get fixed on the little things.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Hello.
I reckon you should go dress shopping mainly for the experience (you only get to do it once):p .
This will either confirm you have made the right choice or you will find another dress you love and can get made to measure.
I know money can be tight, but you only get to do this once so you need to feel like a princess in whichever dress you chose:o .
My mum didn't even see my dress till my wedding day:D !
