Worried about the finances

I have been looking for a new job for the last 4 years. I have been working for my current company over 10 years but have felt for a long time that I wasnt going to progress there and that the morals of the company are less than honorable.

I have been offered a new job that would get me into the field that I have always wanted to be in and would be a real coup for me. There is just 1 problem - it is only funded until march 09. By the time my criminal record check comes through it will be the new year and I will have work for just 3 months.

I have a small about of debt on my credit card (£250) and my partner (who supported me working part time as I hate my old job so much) pays almost all the bills. He also took over my credit card debt of £1500 as he could get a 0% card and I couldnt being on a low income.

The new job is full time and should bring in £350/£400 extra a month but seeing as I am only going to be working for 3 months I am now worried about the long term. It is getting so bad that I cannot sleep (hence the reason I am posting now) and that all the joy of my new job and new opportunities have been competely lost.

There is no way of knowing if my post will be further funded until Feb time but I feel that I cant go on feeling this way. If it isnt continued my partner can support us together just (leaving just £100 for expenses after the bills) and I am hoping that I would get contribution based JSA if necessary.

My god I have posted War and Peace havent I? Sorry for running on - this is playing on my mind so much I feel I am going demented.

  • Hi Budding

I cannot advise you what to do, only you can do that.

In my opinion you will always regret not taking this job if you decide against it, and will look back in future thinking what if.

The worst case scenario is that you are out of work in march, in the meantime you will have earned enough to pay off your current credit card debt. If you are out of work in march, would you take any job that came along until you could get back into the field you want to be in. The 3 months may also give you the experience that would enable you to get back into the field later.

As I said tho only you and your partner can decide on your future

    Good Luck

How old are you? I get the impression your not old (meant to be a compliment!). I agree with the fool ^^^, and it sounds like you want to go for it.

A job/career is really important, you spend more time there than at home and it takes up a huge part of your life. You sound a little uncontent with your job, maybe you've outgrown it.

I think, whatever happens you will land on your feet. If you do get further work - fantastic - if not, I'm sure other opportunties will arise, plus you've gained another bit of great experience.

I took a job recently that is funded until Jun 2009. I dont know if it will continue but it was something I really wanted to do, and at the end of the day you never know if other avenues may open for you whilst you're there.

Why not take it and see where it leads you?
  • I have accepted the post - if the funding was for longer then I would have no worries but it is the 3 months that is bothering me.

I am 33 so my career has been non existant up until this point as my current job is my only job since leaving Uni.

I think that I will just have to cut back the budget to the absolute tightest and then save every penny extra that comes my way until I know what is happening.

The job itself isnt the gamble - it is the risk that I am putting the household under if there is no work after March

By saying you are waiting for your CRB to come back I am assuming you have taken a job with the Government (as they only tend to fund for ex amount of time). Don't forget that the new financial year starts in April so they may well have funding for the post in the new financial year, but if they don't, see if they have a temporary staff register than you can put your name on for any vacancies that crop up when your job comes to the end of its fixed term.

I agree with the other poster, you would have regretted it for a long time.
At least this way you have got your foot in the door, so to speak, and you can look out for other posts while youre there and hopefully the funding for progression in your present position will come through.

Glad you've 'gone for it' and good luck
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • Hi
I'm not all religious or anything but I believe "God" or the "Cosmos" always provides and to be honest JSA would cover what you're earning now. So I'd jump at it, life is too short to stay in a job you hate and if you're earning extra you can always put it away just in case until it's confirmed??

I'm in a similar situation just waiting for the offer - already had one job offer but this one has loads more potential if it works!

As I said i'd jump at it, do they even have a hint of whether it may continue what's is doing i'm just intrigued??

  • They have no idea - they have just taken on 4 people in this post - 2 perm (they know they have funding past march 09) and 2 temp (funded til march).

I am not the only person in this position but like someone else said there is something to be said for karma
