Job at HMRC...

Hi,

I have just started a job at HMRC as an Assistant Officer (grade AO), and have only been there for about 2 weeks. I've noticed my branch now has several Officer positions at grade O become available which I'm thinking of applying for. I feel I have the necessary skills/qualifications required for the job, however, I don't know how likely they are to take internal candidates, particularly since I've only just started there and already have a job with them. Is it worth going for a fixed-term appointment job (until March 2010), rather than stay at the post I'm at, which happens to be a permanent position, with less pay?

Any thoughts/experiences would be appreciated.

On one point I would say yes go for the job, but in reality after only being there 2 weeks, it looks like you have itchy feet and could be percieved as not wanting to stay, and that you have got one eye in another direction.

Sorry to put a dampner on it x

  • I worked as an AO for the Home Office. I had to pass a 6 month probration until i could apply for higher grades, You may or may not have to do the same. Personally my advice would be stay as an AO grade for 6 months and then apply for an O position. This way you can gain experience in the post your in and then have a better chance of being upgraded. im sure there will be plenty more positions in the future.

So you know the IT system to the point it's second nature, you know your job inside out, are able to process paperwork you're given without reference or assistance and you don't need to ask for help or refer to manuals you were given?

Somehow, 2 weeks in, I doubt it. Sort out being able to do your job to a decent level first before going for promotion. You can be damned sure you'll be questioned on aspects of your job that there's no way you can know about OTTOYH in such a short time.

I am an AO for probation, same rule applies 6 months (your probation period)
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

As others have said you won't be able to apply internally until you've completed your promotion. However, if it isn't filled internally you will be able to apply as an external candidate.
