Freezing intrest?

I've got a few credit card bills which im struggling to pay off.
I cant swap to 0% intrest or lower APRs as i dont want to apply for more credit just yet. I got refused my last application so im holding on for a bit.
Im returning to work full time next week so hopefully in 2006 i can really start hitting the cards.
Is it worth me phoning and trying to get them to freeze intrest? If i could do this it would be a great help as i'd actually start making a dent in my debt. But what affect does it have on me credit rating wise?
I've used the snowball calculator which mae me face up to how much i owe and i've been doign my best to follow it as best i can, just this month i ahd to make minimum payments only due to xmas and my wage having to last an extra week.
