You may also be a victim of the decline and fall of the "With-profits" concept, which is another thing in itself .But without knowing any details, it's hard to make suggestions about what to do. If you are in the WP fund, does it have an MVR exit penalty if you want to leave? Equally, does it have a Guaranteed annuity rate attached if you leave it to maturity?

As I don't want to incur the wrath of the great one, I've PM'd you. ;)

My advice is to take with a pinch of salt any early projections, understand that projections are intended to make you feel comfortable but are only based on crystal ball gazing and that the lowest prediction now regulated by the FSA (?) is probably the the safest prediction. After having said that nothing invested is safe. Am I being too cynical?
Your advice is good and you aren't being cynical but realistic. Returns aren't guaranteed so you need to monitor things regularly and adjust investments and contributions as needed. The situation now also demonstrates how the valuations can vary considerably from year to year.

Use cautious projections for your minimal income needs and the more generous ones as something to aim for and perhaps an opportunity to reduce contributions if you get near to retirement and find that you have achieved them.

Has Ed recommended that you move to a SIPP yet? ;)

Don't mind jem16, she's one of those teachers with a copper-bottomed taxpayer funded pension, so she doesn't really know anythig much about the problems private sector pension investors have to deal with. :(
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

    Generalisations again Ed.

I have a pension in payment at the moment from the private sector. I also have a Personal Pension. My two sons are in the private sector with money purchase schemes.

Best to stick to facts please.
