How do I issue my own invoices without setting up a limited company? I'm interested to know...

Anyone can - you can be a sole trader, partnership, ltd company, plc etc.

In its simplest form, a hand written bill.

But you may want to use business software to print your own, or more sophisticated integrated book keeping software.

Have just been through all this with OH as he is looking to set up a limited company and go self employed (if he is made redundant-very likely, he was hoping to hear today so on pins lol will go now, if not after christmas). There are a few other options all can be discussed with the accountants. Worth speaking to a few and getting recomendations if you can.

We chose an accountant we liked(who were personally recommended). We ended up with me doing the books and invoices, with them doing the tax calculations and setting everything up. But you can get them to do everything. To issue an invoice you just print one up on headed paper (think plumbers bill or car bill), some bigger companies may ask you to submit time sheets or simular for them to process the payments. The accountant can price for whatever you need from them.

    Good luck

  • OK great - thanks ALIBOBSY. Will look into meeting with an accountant soon then
  • as alibobsy says - best to go on recommendation for an accountant.
I would say 90% of our clients came to our firm via recommendation from other clients. Most firms won't charge for the initial meeting, so if you're not comfortable with them or the prices, you're not normally under any obligation - but just check on that when you phone to book.

As far as invoicing, a good old fashioned duplicate invoice book from a stationers would be fine or if you are more computer orinetated, then a template set up in Word would be fine.
