Ok heres the deal. I have never bought carpet before and got no idea how to. Im looking to carpet a 4 bedroom house. Anyone got any advise on carpeting?
Want to carpet it all the same including the staircase but vinyl in the bathroom?
What sort of prices should a decent wear carpet be? Am I better buying the carpet and getting a fitter or buy fitting included? Major retailer or small shop?
thanks in advance.

Whilst it was a while ago, when I wanted to carpet the whole house (4 beds), it was much much cheaper to buy off the roll.
I measured the whole house (into door recesses and allowing a extra for cutting) and mapped this onto a 4m wide roll, identifying I needed Xm in length. I then took my requirements to a local specialist shop who could order roll lengths from the manufacturer. It helped that we knew what carpet we wanted (a plain Wilton) after spotting it in the factory shop. The roll was delivered by the carpet shop cut into key segments ready for the fitter to get to work. We sourced a fitter by asking around - they usually contract to the shops and do their own work also.
The benefit of this was we got the carpet at just above cost price plus fitting. The only risk was if the measurements had been wrong - but I'd triple checked them!0 -
I would get a few quotes from different companies. These days, they come to your house, show you some samples, measure and price everything up for you at no obligation.
Don't be afraid to haggle prices down.. eg. "Do you do any discounts"., "Is that your best price?"
When we had ours done a few years ago, we haggled it down to about a hundred less, provided that we pay cash and came to a decision more or less immediately. We made the mistake of not getting more quotes though, as it was a carpets remnants centre, and we assumed it was the best price.0 -
Could anyone give a cost of what they paid?

We didn't do the whole house. For plain carpets and fitting, I think we paid around £500 for two bedrooms (one double, one single), hall and stairs (three storeys).0
