Cause of bankruptcy - Alcoholism

Hi All,

I am just filing in my forms and have got to the cause of bankruptcy statement.

The main reason for my problems is an alcohol addiction that has been with me for over 15 years.

I am presently 5 months sober and undergoing rehab treatment.

Should I include all this in the statement? How personal should I make it?

I would be greatfull for any advice as im abit stuck as to what to put down.

Thanks,

Cozzy

Firstly congratulations for doing so well :T :T

I think you should put it down if it is the cause of your debts. you don't have to say a lot but if you are honest about it and that you are now doing so well recovering, the judge will see that you are trying to get help with your situation.

Am sure some others will be along to give some more advice too.

    :D Well done :D

plus you should have seen my first try at cause of bankruptcy! a proper essay! I stil have to work on it and cut it down! :o

    Yes. Make it personal.

You will find that as an ex-alchoholic and having to go BR because of it, will "earn" you a BRU - this is nothing scary, its just that its a restriction order put in place after your bankruptcy, so you cannot get credit over £500, be a company director etc.

Being personal and showing (which is more important) that you are dealing with your problem in the best ways possible, that you accept your actions and are doing something about it so it doesn't happen again.

The OR and the judge on BR day want to see that you have learnt from past mistakes and have no intention of going back. Although depending on "why" from 15 years ago, you may not want to be that specific.

There is a thread on the boards here for this sort of support - I don't frequent it so will have to search, but you will find a good support group for all sorts on MSE!

Make sure the OR is aware that you are in rehab and have sought help, it will help reduce any potential BRO/BRU.

Oh, and well done on facing up to your problems, that's the biggest hurdle done.
  • Well done on being 5 months sober...that's a huge achievement. Like everyone else says, just be honest with the OR.
