In the past when conflicts from new software or simple(!) downloads seem to cause slight problems (ie HP scanner with OCR Readiris9 & latterly with downloaded Registry RepairPro causing TrayApp problems with error 1706 mentioned) System restore has helped.
However because when restored my MSworks calendar lost info & so I undid first restore to attempt to copy the relevant info.
After this I selected another restore date , noticed that it took for ever to finish (& I mean a couple of hours) & then noticed an earlier Problem item previously dealt with by sys restore in November.I dacided to try another date but after some time the notice appeared to say Virtual Memory needs to be increased????
At this stage I decided to call it a day & I guess rather stupidly closed down!
Now on startup it gets to "Welcome" & a notice appears:-
Explore.exe unable to locate a component.
This appln has failed tostart because BROWSEUI.dll was not found- Reinstalling the application may fix problem.
The system was now to all intents frozen except that CONTINUED
I'm not too worried at losing info on PC as I fortunatelly took a backup copy of data a day orso ago. I therefore

Continuation!!!! (I've lost long messages before!!)
The system appeared to be frozen BUT alt, cont, del brought up Task manager thro whioch I could restart etc but to no avail.
Advice was rec'd to use xp disc to either repair or reinstall.
As no notice was taken of the disc I ventured into the Bios & altered the boot source to the cd drive & tried again.
At the press any key stage the options were presented and two attempts were made 1/ to repair 2/ to reinstall.
The result on both occasions was that:-
"No hard drive could be found instalation cannot continue press F3 to exit".
Also when in the Bios From memory now in the "Main" head section the first primary drive was "Not recognised" (I'll check the correct wording
Have I gone beyond self repair or is there a way back????
Thanks in advance, TonyB
Fortunately my older PC still works & will do in the interim but is on 98SE0 -

Are you saying that BIOS is not detecting the drive at all?
That is a more serious problem.
The solution to your original problem is .... from memory ...
1. Boot machine
2. Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring task bar up.
3. File->run 'cmd'
4. cd c:\windows\system32
5. dir browseui <- hit tab
You'll probably have a few results. Copy say browseui(2).dll
6. cp browseui(2).dll browesui.dll
7. exit
8. reboot via task manager
You might find on reboot one or two others missing and you'll need to repeat for thos files.0 -
have you changed the primary drive 0 setting in the bios from auto to something else?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

put in your original xp disk, you should be able to boot up from that, then repair from the disk.
then reboot and check that your boot options in startup are for the correct hard drive if you have 2 in use.what is the plural of moose?

Or, press F8 at startup (as if you're going into Safe Mode) and choose Last Known Good Configuration.0
