Mince Pies

Options
Hi, I want to make some mince pies and freeze them but was wondering whether to cook them first and then freeze or freeze raw and cook when they are required. What has everyone else done in past?
Thanks

I've done both and had no problems either way. If I have the oven on and have a spare shelf I'll usually cook them first but otherwise I freeze them raw.

I used to make the pastry and freeze it and then make them up as needed, that was until a friend who is a pastry chef told me that i could cook them and then freeze them. I have not looked back! It is only ds and dh who eat them so it easy for them to get a couple out of the freezer when they fancy one! It saves loads of time as you just cook them in one batch!
  • I usually cook them then freeze, so it's easy to take a few out and cook from frozen when unexpected guests arrive - about 10 mins and you have freshly baked pies! yumm must start baking them soon.
Also I only have a small number of mini foil trays so if I cook them first I can reuse the trays for my next batch ;).

Not sure about other people on here, but I wouldn't nuke them in the microwave at all.

Nuked pastry isn't that pleasant and the mincemeat is a very high sugar content, which is also not good in a m/wave (has been known to catch fire!).

I'd just take them out and leave to defrost at room temperature for a while. Or you could warm them in a 'low oven' for a while and then sprinkle with some caster/icing sugar while still warm.
  • I have done it both ways too but it is far easier to cook them first and then reheat in th oven or microwave
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
