David Lloyd Gym Membership

I discovered that if you take out a corporate membership (lots and lots of companies included) you aren't tied to the usual 1 yr contract, there's no joining fee AND you get to use all the clubs in the network from day one.

Some clubs in the network are much cheaper than others, one just 5 miles away from the one I go to is for a start is £10 p/m cheaper so it may be worth joining a different club.

At the moment most clubs are offering free membership til January if you sign up now so ask about this. Your partner can join at a corporate joint rate (sorry not sure about families). Also most clubs are undergoing a massive refurb with a complete change of gym equip.

Even as a corporate membership, DL is a very expensive club to use:confused: However being able to use all clubs means I can use my membership to the full. I go to 3 different clubs in my area regularly (great for a change of scenery) and the network is so big I can find a club nearby when I'm working away and visiting family so I really get my money's worth and always fit in a workout :D

Happy moneysaving!

Unless your going to spend a good couple of hours there a week, i wouldn`t join David Lloyd- their fees are extortionate for what you get. Rip off!
  • I'm a David Lloyd Corporate member and I love my local one. It's never been over-run with kids when I've been there and the facilities and classes are better than any other gym I tried (I tried all the ones near me before I joined here).

Dinah, best thing to do is just call your local one and find out if the council have an affiliation.

  • I am a member too and while I think the facilities are great, customer service is terrible! I suggest that you read their customer feedback book before you join. I wish I did.

I don't understand how kids can afford membership when I am reluctant to fork out - in fact if anything my tipping point would be the "exclusivity" the membership brings. Do you live in an affluent area (ie bratz subsidised by rich parents)?

Is that a book actually in each gym or online? My parents used to go to this David Lloyd and they really rated it, I've been on a guest pass a few times and it's clean, smart and has loads of facilities but I agree the £64 per month is pricy. Unfortunately gyms seem to be the only way I exercise and I need to exercise due to having high blood pressure.

I am a member of David Lloyd, I joined so my DD could have swimming lessons but I think the gym has excellent facilities. I am tied in for just 3 months, after that I can leave. I am currently paying £41 as it has just gone up by £1 a month, For this my kids get free membership until they are 6 and then it is £11 a month for them. They have some kids clubs that they can go to (sporty type things/yoga bugs) and swimming so well worth it - all the adult classes are included and there are a lot of classes for that money, it also means I can go swimming whenever I want because the council run gyms are all cosed during the day as the kids use them for swimming lessons and I can only swim suring the day when the kids are at school. The changing rooms are always clean, the showers are hot and private. There is loads of equipment available and I would choose this over the council gym that is £10 a month cheaper as it is nicer, no limits on when you can use it (on or off peak and swimming evenings only ay council one). I've not tried to leave yet as I think it is great, I joined in September. There was a £20 joining fee.

Also, in regard to DD swimming lessons, we spent a year at the council gyms and they would not get her out of armbands as there was no teacher in with them and there were non-swimmers in the deep end!! It made no sense at all and there was no progression in any of the kids. The teachers never spoke to you and they changed week in week out and the class sizes were huge (11 one week!!). Then we moved and DL was our only real option to be honest, she was out of armbands from week one at David Lloyd, she has just gone through 2 levels instead of one and is really confident in the water now and has been for just 10 weeks. I just wish I had known about DL before instead of wasting the money that I have done on lessons at the council run pool!! I even tried to get private lessons via the council run pool and they never even bothered returning my calls!! What is more the teacher is there to speak to at the end of the class to get a feel for how the kids are doing.
