Pay?

Im a supervisor in a shop, today a part time assistant told me she had got a 40p pay increase and was on now on x an hour, which is 50p less than what I earn an hour...and i work full time. Do I have any sort of rights to bring this up with the boss, to get some sort of justification as to why an assistant is almost on the same wage as me or is this fairly standard in retail? :confused:

    Only assertive people have the right to raise it with the boss. The rest aren't sure.

    She is only on a part-time contract, and so she needs the money. Besides, she is probably more productive than you (part-timers are at home when they are tired, but there will be times when you are worn out but still at work).


    Anyway, that differential of 50 pence per hour works out to be ten thousand pounds over the course of a decade, which is a pretty hefty reward for being a supervisor.

    You can bring it up but don't expect it to be taken the way you expect. People get paid different amounts all the time and with wages in retail being low anyway, someone is always going to be within a quid an hour of you unless you're in a managerial or assistant managerial position. Even then, I've seen managerial jobs advertised at a quid over NMW.

    If you don't like it, negociate a wage rise but it's entirely up to them what they pay their staff.

    Its totally normal. In the store I work the supervisors are on 40p an hour more than the regular staff. Its disgusting as the amount of stress they have to put up with compared to a general member of staff is unbelievable but its the norm in the industry so theres nothing they can do about it.

    And full-time people do it for fun? Many part-timers are doing a job just to get out of the house, or don't take the job seriously because they're just doing it as a holiday/student job.

    Many may be, but many are not, they work part time because they have caring responsibilities for kids or elderly relatives, or because their health doesn't allow them to work full time. I work part time because my health is poor at the moment, but I take my job very seriously.

    To go back to the OP, as I recall from when I was in retail, a very small differential from staff to supervisor is normal.

    Thats very judgemental. On top of being a supervisor I am also the stock controller, I manage the epos system, then I am involved in pricing and putting stock out, and I also have to man the tills, often at the same time as trying to do all my other responsibilites, and the shop is far from small. I do exactly the same things as her around the shop, and do my job on top of that. I of course only work full time cause I have nothing else to do with my life, not cause I need the money.

    well then thing is the same satuation happens with me all the time as i m working in food shop and all the new crew when they are promoted to manager get pay raise and i haven't got any thing from last 2 years cuz according to my manager i m not working hard enough.but that is not the problem, the problem is our manger is lesbian and she prefer girls and also she is racist to.when i came to this shop(don't wana tell the name)it took me some 2 or more years to become manager and the new crew(the one our manger like)get only few months to become a manager.well i don't wana mourn abt it but the system is not working well and if you work hard that pay !!!! for you either u hav to obey every one in the job or you don't get anything

    Welcome to retail. If you want to have a larger wage difference over the standard staff, get out of the retail sector.

    I am assuming that a good standard of spelling and grammar was not a requirement of the promotion? :confused:

    In answer to the OP, as others have said, a 50p difference between shop assistants and supervisors is quite standard in the retail sector. I would be careful about approaching management and saying that you have been discussing what each of you earn, as this could be against company policy.
    Gone ... or have I?
