Whatever the reason, the Empty Homes Agency (EHA) believes that a staggering 85% of empty homes in this country belong to landlords

The 2 empty homes in my road aren't owned by landlords.
One has been empty for 3 years as a divorcing couple can't agree on anything.
The other was bought run down by people who now can't get the funding to do the refurbishment they wanted.
Both are empty because they are no longer water tight or have serviceable kitchens!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. If the homes are empty, they are not owned by landlords (click for wiki definition).
The Torygraph trying to stir up trouble - badly.
GGThere are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.0 -

excellent.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Is that a pedantic play on words or a genuine reason to cast doubt on the stats?
i.e "would-be-landlords-if-1-investment-property-owned"
or "landlords-of-other-properties-who-have-empty-ones-too"
...could have been applied, perhaps?0 -
Quadruple council tax on them.0

Why do you think that's a good idea, please?0 -
Use or lose it might be an alternative approach.
By leaving properties out of the market, in these numbers, they are artificially maintain price levels - any chance of an anti-cartel ruling, on both buying and renting fronts...?!0 -

Unlikely as it's not a cartel.0 -

Why should councils get monies for non existant services. Maybe there is a good reason for a property being empty .... a refurb to keep the property up to scratch ..... tenants can't be found, etc... I'm paying on a flat I'm refurbing at the moment and it entirely winds me up. Especially when I'm paying a fortune on my main residence for the council to waste it, because I'm afraid to say it they have a substantial percentage of half-wits, and jobsworths.
Seems to me that the more you put into the system the less you get out. As a 40% tax payer I have paid in a fortune and am entitled to sweet FA back out ..... while the country is riddled with workshy individuals that cream the system, while Mr Brown and his chums stand idly by. :mad:0 -
The comment by poppysarah is basically that the goverment or someone needs to do something to force that home to be used.
If you were the neighbours of that property and it was a terrace or semi-detached would you be happy living next to an empty property that had problems?I'm not cynical I'm realistic
