Old Debts Appearing

After finally paying off what I thought was the last of my old debts, how upset was I to see another appear from no-where. The letter claims they have been trying to contact me for years though this is the first letter I have ever seen. Sadly the debt is less than 6 years old so no loophole to slide through , my question.. Is there any way of me finding out if there are any other hidden debts out there in my name which I have forgotten about and need settling
