I got my parents amongst other things a rose bush called ruby anniversary, it produces beautiful deep red flowers and they loved it and is something that will last many years.
It was from one of the gardening catalogues online I cant remember if it was J Parkers.

For my parents I put together a special photo album which was a compilation of photos from family and friends - which was either a copy of a photo they probably wouldn't have or a photo of a one of their favourite occasions spent with them. It was a really special gift as everyone who came to their party had contributed to the album and my parents loved the time and thought that had gone into it. They're now due to celebrate their golden anniversary next year - how time flies! Now I've got to think of another idea!
