I Picked up a fresh Turkey from my butcher on sat Morning, to cook today, infact I told him I wasn't cooking it until today, and he said that would be fine.
However this morning when I got it out of the fridge it is rank.
Apart from the fact that it cost me a lot of money for a fresh turkey, my question is , how long should it have stayed fresh for, I would have thought 3 days would have been fine.

I would have thought a really fresh one should have lasted. Is your butcher open this morning? I'd be hot-footing it round to him right now if he is to ask him directly. At least then you can get it swapped for something else0

i've telephoned him and got no answer, so i'm assuming he's shut.
I'm spitting feathers, to be honest.0 -
Did it still have the giblets inside? That would explain why it hasn't kept fresh.0

No I took them out when I got it home, and my fridge is at the correct temperature.0

Hi
I wouldnt be happy either, infact Id be bloo*y mad  I would say that a fresh turkey kept in the right conditions as you have done, should have lasted fine.
I would want my money back and something as a goodwill gesture

Are you sure the whole turkey is off? It could just be the moisture on the outside. Try rinsing & drying it then sniff it again.
I often find that poultry (and fish) can pong a bit on the outside, but it turns out just to be the layer of moisture on the outside skin.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Hi there,
Yep, I tried washing it, but it's most definatley off. It was fine last night when I stuck my nose in the fridge. I have kept the turkey, it's in the shed as we speak,( not a very welcome guest in the house lol) and willl be speaking to the butcher as soon as he re-opens.
What annoys me is that if he had said don't leave it that long I wouldn't have bothered with the fresh one. He's very good normally, and I always recommend him to friends.
Oh well, we've had a re-think about our Christmas dinner, and will enjoy what we've got anyway.
There's always something isn't there, especially if you're oldstyle!0 -
i would definetly complain, 3 days for a fresh item of poulty should be fine.
It sounds like the turkey has been sitting around for a while.
I know someone who gets given freshly shot pheasants and they get hung up for days before they get plucked and gutted.
To be fair to your butcher, it might not have been him who had been keeping it sitting around - but his supplier. Even so, your complaint is with the butcher who supplied it to you.
Enjoy the day anyway.0
