Applying for jobs after taking time out from working

I have not worked for almost 18months. It was my choice to give up my last job and take some time out. I am now looking to get a job and have seen a few that I would be interested in applying for. I have experience in these jobs but I am not sure how to word my covering letter to explain the gap in my CV. I gave up work to give me a chance to be at home with the kids for a while. Does any one have any suggestions on what I can put. I just seem to end up rambling and my covering letter is almost a full page.
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

I always put 'I was at home whilst the children were young' and it is also a good reason for returning to work. Good luck and hope you get a great job.0
