Will negotiating phone bill ruin credit?

Ok I'm a uni student and got a contract phone with Vodafone a couple of months ago - stupidly I only went for a 70-minute a month plan because it looked cheap at only £20pm  Unfortunately I've made about 700 minutes of calls this month (to family and friends since I'm at university) and didn't realise that any unauthorised minutes are charged at a whopping 60p a minute

So basically next month I will have to pay a direct debit phone bill of around £400  which I essentially can't afford. I've upgraded to a much better price plan (600 minutes for only £30pm, how could I have been so silly :o) but I still have this bill to pay.

Now my plan is to ring up Vodafone and negotiate a payment plan, say an extra £50 a month on top of my bill until the outstanding balance is paid, but my question is will such an arrangement appear on my credit file? Having worked for a couple of years or so before uni, I have two or three credit cards/credit accounts, all with an impeccable record - I've literally never missed a single payment since I became 18, and as such have excellent credit.
The last thing I want to do, then, is wreck it by Vodafone putting arrears on my credit file and making it difficult to get a mortgage in the future (especially in this economic climate!) - I'd probably rather borrow the money off family, which is far from desirable but better than having 2 years of on-time payments completely wrecked.

Thanks for the help :)

Hmm, I'm not sure to be honest, other people may know. But if it's like utility bills I'm guessing it wont put a mark on your credit file, as long as you make the payments on time.

The best thing will probably to ask Vodaphone themselves.
  • i work for a mobile phone company and unfortunatley this will go on your credit file as you are still late in making the payment even if you have an arrangement
