Hand blender - reassurance needed

I've always used a liquidizer with a jug when making soup, but I've just bought a Sainsburys Basics hand blender and am about to try it out. I'm a bit nervous as I've never used one before and am frightened in case it is too lively and pebbledashes the kitchen with soup!
Is it really safe to use one of these in an uncovered bowl?

Yes, make sure you keep it vertically in the stuff you are blending and as deep as possible.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Great advice, and so quick! Thank you both. I'm off to try it as soon as Countdown has finished! :T

Put it in your soup before switching on;)0

Verdict - pretty successful, and so much easier to clean afterwards. It had a struggle with the carrots but at least the soup looks like it has real veg in it!
It gave me a surprise by pulling itself down into the bottom of the pan and clinging on to it - I'd expected to be able to move it around while in use. I assume that's okay as it doesn't seem to have damaged either itself or the pan.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

It was only £4.39 and was on a shelf marked "sale of electrical goods" but I'm not sure if that was the normal price or a reduced price as I couldn't see a sticker or anything.
Hope you can find one in your branch. They also had a standard Sainsbury one which was reduced from £10.99 to £7.99 and looked a bit more compact, but for occasional use the cheapo one should be fine. I picked up two leaflets attached to the shelf, one with a phone number for queries on electrical items, and the other giving info on refunds if necessary. Everything seems to have a one year guarantee, which is reassuring.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

well i've been thru 2 cheapo ones inthe last 10 years so not bad. The bit that holds the spindle goes in the end. My second one went last week when I had just started blending my soup and the blade just fell out so i had lumpy soupJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0

Mine's a basic Durabrand from Asda - cost around £4.99 and well worth it
!
Like the OP - it frightened the living daylights out of me when it dragged my hand downwards as it attached to the bottom of the container.
I have a jug with a rubber lid that came with mine. The lid fixes to the base as well to help stop the jug from moving around on the counter top while using it.
I scoop veggies out of the soup into the container and then blend them in there a few at a time before stirring them back into the pan.0
