Has anyone used the ibrew system they sell in Wilkinsons?
  • I am looking for a tried and tested recipe for parsnip wine, anyone please?

This summer we have been drinking orange wine, honey wine and various kit wines. I have just bottled 2011 elderberry wine and want to get prepared for parsnip, which I believe is one of the best

    Hi Kittie,

This is the one I made last year. It was my first time so nothing to compare it to but it was beautifully clear and very drinkable :)

I don't know where that recipe came from as I copied it into a notebook so apologies to the originator.

Pick and scrub 1.8kg (4lb) parsnips
    Slice without peeling
Place in large pan with 4.5l (1 gallon) of water

Cook until tender then strain liquid into another vessel
(Don't throw the parsnips away - make soup!)

Reheat the infused liquid with 1.35kg (3lb) sugar *
Juice and rind of 1 lemon
    1 tsp yeast

    Ferment and bottle

    Drink within 6 months

*I though this would be a bit sweet so only used 2 1/2 lb sugar and ended up with a medium/dry wine. This year I'll try a little less but I like a very dry wine.

    Enjoy!

    A x

What have you made recently? Mine is:

    4 Demi-Johns Blackberry wine.

But you have to remember when it is blackberry time. Too stingy to pay for the kits.

Also been told to leave it at least a year to mature so will be ready for Christmas next year.

What are you going to make next? Instead of the kits I was going to purchase yellow stickered fruit what ever it may be. I hope it is strawberries though.
  • Many years ago I have made wine and in my experience if using fresh products they need to mature for longer, at least a year. kits do what they say but they do improve with age. I have tasted peapod wine at six months, absolutely vile then one five years later found at the back of the garage lovely white wine.

I made strawberry wine about 4yrs ago ..havent tried it yet..thanks for reminding me. I used ys Strawberries and a large dollop of good conserve. Also made elderberry, blackberry and eldeberry blackberry mix. I drank all that ..think the blackberry was best..I left it a year. Used to do the kits regurlary but havent bothered this year, must start again methinks...
  • I've never bought the kits, would much sooner buy fresh ingredients, I think it works out cheaper.

We have just bottled up Beetroot, Elderflower, Peach and date wine.

The peach one was made using basic tins of peach slices, very nice it tastes too, so will defo be doing another batch of that.

Hubby is going to be starting some parsnip wine this week sometime, although I don't like the sound of that one.
