Wedding shops being secretive about dress?

I have been to one dress shop so far. I was surprised at how secretive the staff were about the dresses I was trying on. I only knew who the designer was for one of them and it was impossible to find out the name of the dresses. All I was told was I would find out the name and designer of my dress after I have bought it! All photography was forbidden so I have no way of remember which dress was which even if I did like one of them I could never ask for it again 'erm it was white ....'

I rather stupidly thought that the shops would be open about the dresses. I could never afford nor would I want to pay the amounts they want for a dress but I do need to try on the dresses before hand. My plan is to get one new from Milly or Landy or second hand but if I don't know what dresses are which it will get very difficult!

Is this normal for the shops to do this? I am going to another shop on Saturday and I am wondering if it will be the same there as well.

  • You've probably answered your own question.

The shop won't want you to try stuff on decide on what you like and then go and buy it elsewhere.

Pronuptia told me the name once I'd decided the one I really liked. I told them it was the first shop I'd been to and could I have the name so I know which one it was ;)

They won't let you take photos as "people go away and make a copy of the dress".

But a google search of the name of the dress reveals all the photo's a dressmaker could need anyway ;)

The dress shop I had mine from wasn't at all like this. How odd!!!
  • I told both the shops that I tried dresses on in that I wanted to show my mum the pictures as she was buying the dress for me, one of them told me the designer, one gave me a brochure and circled the dress! I can see their point if they don't want to though!

  • Oh and they both let my friends take pictures with my phone!

Perhaps it was just the shop you went to? I've been into a couple & tried on, and they've been fairly open about designer & dress style (although one had given it a different style number to the designer, but a quick internet browse sorted that out!)

Most will have a label - at least you can get an idea of the designer from that :)

Mine wouldn't let us take any pictures but they were quite happy for my friend to do a sketch of it and make a note of the designer and name.

I guess the secrecy is something that will become more and more common as places like landy increase in popularity.

I can see where they are coming from as they are investing their time into helping people who have no intention of making a purchase.

(can totally see why peope choose to go with landy etc as well!)

  • The dress was probably being sold more cheaply by their competitors so they didn't want you to know the details in case you did a price comparision! I tried dresses on in 5 shops when getting married last year and never came across this problem (although I couldn't take photos until I'd paid deposit which was VERY annoying)

It all works out good in the end.
If it's not good, it's not the end!

They wont let you take photography as the dress could be copied and sold on cheaper... thats what Im guessin
