Beware Sainsburys online delivery dates and special offers

After receiving a special offer email I ordered some items from the sainsburys online grocery store. This included sirloin steaks at 50% off and wine at 25% off. Before ordering i was asked to book a delivery slot but, as I didnt know if I was actually going to make the order until I had gathered enough items, I went to the shopping area first and then booked the delivery date afterward.
They have been making much of the free Tues/Wed/Thurs delivery dates and so I decided to book for delivery on the first available Tuesday (in Sainsbury's own words they prefer customers to go for those dates). However, when the goods arrived I found I had been charged full price for the steaks (£40 instead of £19) and only received 5% discount on the wine. The effect was that my shop cost me £35 more than anticipated.
I contacted the sainsbury helpline who told me it was my mistake and basically it was tuff luck that the goods were DELIVERED outside the offer expiry date, but they offered to collect the goods and refund me.
This meant them destroying £29 worth of good quality steak as it would obviously not be put back on the shelf, but the "senior manager" I spoke to on their helpline said that it didnt matter, even when I pointed out that to let me have the goods at the advertised price would make me happy, save their delivery van driving 4.5 miles each way to collect the stuff and destroying perfectly good meat, particularly in the light of current thinking.
I have to say that I was surprised by the fact that they didnt honour the items I clearly purchased at the time of the offer, shocked to discover their attitude to customer service and amazed at the idea of simply destroying the meat - I now feel guilty about not keeping it even at the higher price as it meant destroying it!
The moral here is to make sure that you book a delivery slot before ordering the goods, as apparantly if I had done it this way round their system would have told me that the offers were not going to be honoured.
However, I shall never know whether that does work, as I for one will not be using their online store again.

Did it say on the website "valid for deliveries between xx/11/09 and xx/11/09"? Tescos is the same and it listed under each "special offer" item, although when you actually get to checkout it does say "you have the following items in your basket where the special offers are not valid....", so you have the option of changing your order. It is really frustrating - its happened to me before now, but if it tells you that the offers are valid from/to which delivery day, I don't think there is anything you can do.0

No wonder they like people to book those dates, especially if they dont notice the prices.
However, not sure how receiving £40 worth of steak equates to throwing away £29 worth.0 -
Should have read throwing away £40 worth!0
