beautyscientist - i have seen a lot of your posts and think they are great, so hope it is okay to temporarily hijack this thread and ask you something - is it possible to create an acne type reaction from any products? i have used realtively gentle products (always gone for the sensitive side) but then went from the Lix Earle/Elemis type products to the OCM then suddenly started having an acne type thing going on...is it possible the products used previously or since could have contributed?

    Hi Red

Acne is specifically an inflammation of the sebaceous glands. If you block them there is a good chance that they will become inflamed. Using neat oil could do this. Dermatologists used to call this acne cosmetica - though I gather that they have stopped because it is only certain cosmetics, i.e., very oily ones, that give this problem.

I only heard about the OCM on here. I haven't tried following the instructions on the website and although I basically agreed with the principle of it, it did seem overcomplicated. I wouldn't be completely surprised if following it might lead to acne cosmetica in some cases. My own version is much simpler. I say just use a dab of olive oil on some cotton wool as a skin cleanser. I suppose I should set up a website advocating it really, but I can't think of any way of spinning it out to more than a sentence or two.

Beautyscientist, you are a star! I was thinking the same thing - basically tried OCM - which I love the principle of, but my skin did not like so much. I am still waiting to take tests, so it may be that it is a hormonal imbalance too, but I am pretty sure that maybe the products I have used did not help...I am thinking that maybe it is just about products that are perhaps not suitable for skincare? I don't know, but I appreciate your response which made a lot of sense (as usual).

I used to wipe eye make-up away in the way you describe, so know that has not caused problems...oh well, we'll have to see what happens!

ps...have you got any views on collodial silver on the skin? I have heard really bad things about it once it is consumed, but is it safe on the skin?

Red, a lot of people get an outbreak when they start the OCM, I know I did but it cleared with time and a mess about with concentrates of oils.

See what i cant get my head around is BS is saying using the ocm will block the pores, yet wiping with oil wont. Now for me that I like about the ocm is that you steam off the residue oil so none left to block the pores. Also when I used DR H and Decleor oil products they were both pressed into the skin and left - no outbreaks from either:confused:

Sorry - no disrespect to BS, but ... I really think that we get to know what suits us. We take a bit from here, there and everywhere and find what doesn't aggravate or is good for us etc.

I have had professional treatments and suffered badly, due to the products that they use. Again, get to know what suits you. As in, I can't do the cleanse and polish - but Johnsons bady wipes do the trick.... ???? Yeah I know, weird... :o

I think one can 'over cleanse' and strip out all the naturals.

Re the oil method, I can't see the difference between the two and therefore am confused too...

  • Everyone's skin is different, especially the OP whose thread we have well and truly hijacked. I hope you don't mind Hula.

I agree completely that you have to try out things and see what works for you.

With regards to oil causing acne, it probably depends a bit on your skin and a bit on how much you use.

I use LIz Earle products too but wanted to point out that her products contain parabens. She writes an article defending the use of parabens on her website.

hi all, just to clarify - i was not asking about the OCM to point any fingers (unfortunately with posts this is where miscommunication can happen - it would be great if we were all having a chat as it would be less likely!).

I know Beautyscientist has posted some really great responses and thought it would be worth asking an opinion on a specific issues. I am not saying that the OCM is flawed but I know that my skin changed after using it and it affected the sebum levels dramatically. This MAY have been caused an over production and led to acne...I truly do not know and I know LOADS of you have had a great experience with it (hence why I tried it in the first place!).

But, I know that my skin has started having an acne thing going on for the first time in nearly a decade. I hope everyone - especially Hula - can forgive anything that tried to suggest that the OCM should not be used by others...I am just in a bit of an unsure place at the moment so looking at everything - last time I had acne it became quite wide-spread and let to some scarring so really want to avoid it at all costs, that is all.

    Red,

It didn't suit me either. I just keep it really simple. I use Johnsons baby wipes to take off my make up!! And not the aloe vera sensitive ones, my skin didn't like them! I then apply Viridian comfrey ointment. That is my night time routine - it suits me!

Day time - Liz Earle light moisturiser and then mineral make up - Elemental Beauty healing foundation. Since I have stuck to the above, my skin has been its best - and I sure am not a spring chicken!! :D
