Indian call centre call re debts

I have received 2 calls from a call centre saying they see I have debts of more than £5000 and are obviously going to offer to do me a consolidation loan or what ever. As I have no debts whatsoever I am intrigued to know where they are getting the info from or are they just random dialling and hoping for the best  Anyone else here had the same call recently ??? Also it is a withheld number. Any idea how I can stop these annoying b4stards

  • I would say they are taking a andom dial punt as the average debt per person (avg across the country) is £5k

Did you catch a company name??? If so you can check if it is registered in the UK. Are you registered with the telephone preference service?

Just had one of those calls about an hour ago, He said that I owed £2000 which I don't, I have no debts. I told him to p**s off and put the phone down.

They get round that by routing the calls to appear as international so you dont know where they are from. TPS have no powers over international numbers

We are regsitered with TPS & also ex-directory & we get the occasional call from Indian call centres. They sometimes don't know our names so I think they are using random number generating software.

    Its pretty annoying!

  • Just tell them you are members of TPS and they are breaking the law by cold calling you. They usually put the phone down pretty quick.

The TPS is the Telephone Preference Service. You basically register your telephone number with them (this is free) and it goes on a national 'Do Not Call' list, and telemarketers are breaking the law if they call you. There website is here:
