A friend has just text me, not asking for help, just needed to rant. He has been offered a job interview but current employer won't give him time off. Is there anything he can do? x

no; his employer is paying him to do a job, not find a new one!
exceptions would be
- its a job in the same company
- he's facing redundancy
would you still pay me to eg do your garden, if I wasn't doing it, but off interviewing for work with your neighbours?Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
he is not automatically allowed time off unfortunately. has he asked for a holiday? or can he rearrange it for a better day or perhaps a telephone interview?
Other than being sneaky and having a sick day, thats the only thing I can suggest am afraid.
hope he gets it sorted.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
Just beware that taking a sickie when you're not sick can result in a disciplinary or sacking if its in your contract as gross misconduct.0

Unless he has the legal right to time off for job interviews - ie he has been made redundant (in which case that legal right exists) - then I do HOPE he hasnt told current firm why he wanted the time off (just went looking for the "DUH" icon - as in hand clapped to forehead - couldnt find it).
I guess his best bet is to tell prospective new firm of problem getting time off - putting a positive slant on it ("I'm so valuable they cant spare me":D ) and fix an alternative date/time and take holiday time for it.0 -
Just a suggestion but could he/she ask to be interviewed outside their present working hours. Usually interviewers can be very accommodating as it is not always easy to arrange an interview during working hours.0

Thanks for all your help! I will pass that on to him. Although I haven't told him I'm asking for advice, so maybe I'll leave it. Thanks again
