Does anyone know where i can get black mustard seeds from? I've seen a number of recipes on here requiring them, but every time i check at tesco (in the herbs and spices isle) they only ever have normal mustard seeds.
Can anyone tell me any other national chain supermarkets where i may be able to pick these up? I say national again because i work during the day, so would need to be open evenings..
If not will standard mustard seeds work as an alternative?
It's for the potatoey / jalfrezi recipe that was posted here recently.
Thanks everyone

I bought black mustard seeds from Julian Graves. I don't know the opening times of their town shops, but they sometimes have branches in garden centres which are open later and on Sundays.0

Hi Everyonee
I have 'lurked' here for ages now, so thought that I better, at long last, show myself:hello:
jonny2510 I purchased mine in Sainsburys..... they are Barts Black mustard seeds and cost about £1.30.

If you have a local Asian (or other "ethnic") grocer who stocks a full range of herbs and spices, they should sell them. That's where I get mine from.

The ones I have are the Natco brand. I got them in ASDA.
My ASDA has two seperate spice sections. One that contains the Swartz and Barts etc. The other is an Asian section and contains the packet spices and dhall beans etc. It was on the top shelf of the Asian section.
I have just done a test for you. I ate 5 black mustard seeds then ate 5 normal mustard seeds. The black mustard seeds seem to have a stronger mustard taste.0 -

I did think that, although I must admit I only thoroughly checked the Swartz, and more glanced past the Asian section (both tescos I use have THREE such sections, so you can see how I possibly missed it).
Thanks for guinnea pigging for me (trying the seeds). Worst case I could always just buy normal mustard seeds, and increase the amount
Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll try ASDA / Sainsburys next then. Just wanted to check they where readily available, before going on the hunt to loads of places only to find out something like they don't sell them over here!
Thanks again everyone0 -
In fact, on further investigation, it looks like Tesco are the ones to go for

I find Lidl and Aldi are great for 'oddities' if you know what I mean
I don't usually shop there cos I live right next door to Asda, but last time I was in I noticed what a great herbs and spice selection they have got. I got a fantastic little garlic mill, and some real Hungarian Goulash paste (its like tomato puree but
more.....'goulashy'I cant understand a word on the label but it tastes great!
