Philadephlia cheese and an egg instead of bechamel for lasagna?

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had tried this....I am making lasagna tonight for friends, so I want it to be right...:o

I usually make it with the standard way with bechamel sauce in the layers, but a friend told me she uses a tub of philly, mixed with a beaten egg and it is fabulous. I know it is probably a more expensive way of doing it....but hey, its for guests...so I don't mind!

I just don't want to ruin it, as my usual lasagna turns out alright.

Whaddya think?

I use milk, 2 eggs and grated cheese all whisked up instead of bechamel, and it works out just fine

For the topping I use a tub of quark (low fat soft cheese) mixed with an egg, or natural yogurt mixed with an egg and then add some grated cheese. Both taste delicious, so your friend's recipe is probably good too.

Jamie Oliver's lasagne uses creme fraiche and parmesan on the top. I've got this from somewhere (probably MSE somewhere) Mix the yoghurt with an egg and some flour (can't be specific about amounts as I don't usually measure, but you want it about the consistency of cake mix) Stir in cheese and pour over your mince/aubergine/potato or whatever you usually use in moussaka and bake till set.
use a carton of low fat cottage cheese, and whiz it up with enough skim milk to the consistency of regular cheese sauce, and then use it as you would regular cheese sauce - layered throughout the lasagne
  • It certainly sounds as though it would work, though I've never tried it. I'd also sprinkle some grated cheese on top. Please let us know how it turns out. Have a great evening.
  • I have used cream cheese and it's lovely, I usually add a little milk to the egg and cream cheese, and also a little grated cheese.

  • my lasagne today is topped with yesterdays cauli cheese (mashed up), value cheddar and some parmesan!!!

i dont like wasting anything so will have to see how it turns out (and if oh notices)! only me and oh tonight - would not do something like that for guests!

That's a great tip. I'm on a low carb diet and always looking for alternative to bechamel...

Well, just nipped through while I am filling the dishwasher to say it was really, really lovely!!

It had the added bonus of making it hold together better....obviously the egg....and it looked fabulous on the plate! A nice little 'tower' of proper layers, and not the usual flat, collapsed runny mess I normally get!

The 'philly' really made the sauce taste wonderful (actually I used Asda's own full fat cream cheese. Half the price.) Because it was to feed six, I used two tubs. Just put the cream cheese in a bowl, added two beaten eggs, and mixed it with a wooden spoon till it was creamy...added a splash of milk. Used it for the two layers, then had enough to top it and sprinkled parmesan and cheddar on the top.

I made the meat filling with steak mince and pork sausagemeat this time instead of just mince. I have to say, the end result was fab.

You could probably use half fat Philly sarahs999!

Edit: Ooops, just noticed you are on low carb, not low fat!
